Jakarta, Indonesia doesn’t have that many touristy-day trips and tours like other countries in the region do. While that sounds like a bad thing, it’s not. What it means is most of the tours and day trips you’ll find in Jakarta are unique. They go to places that are not seen by everyone and show you fascinating things. From a one-on-one day trip with a real local Indonesian, to an unusual city tour of Jakarta and a UNESCO day trip, these three are the top tours in Jakarta.
Jakarta On the Spot – This completely unique day trip is run by a company called Tours By Locals. It’s a small Jakarta company that sets you up with a private local guide, who will show you unique places in Jakarta while giving you a completely personalized 10 hour tour.
The tour starts out with your guide picking you up at your hotel, the airport or a cruise ship if you’re on a cruise. The tour includes transportation in an air-conditioned private car, all local transports like tricycle or bicycle riding, and tickets to museums.
Before the tour, you’ll finalize where you want to go from a list of suggestions the guide will give you. Choices include Japan Town, Pasar Senen for some good cookies and cakes, breakfast at Cafe Batavia, time at a spa, the Glodok Chinatown market and temples, Menteng Plaza and late night street dining and a host of other fun things. The tour is kid-friendly and you’ll be dropped off back at your hotel or other drop-off point convenient to you at the end of the trip.
Jakarta City Tour – A good way to get used to Jakarta and find your way around is to take a Jakarta City Tour. The tour is a half-day tour. You’ll be picked up at your hotel around 9:00 am and head out to see some unusual sights.
Some of the places you’ll visit include the National Museum with its ancient artifacts, China Town for shopping and Sunda Kelapa Harbour, where you’ll walk around the harbour and see every kind of fish and seafood imaginable, all fresh and some still flopping around. You’ll also drive by the Presidential Palace to see where the president lives, stop for a drink and snacks and, after the tour, be taken back to your hotel around 1pm, just in time for lunch.
Borobudur World Wonder Day Trip – One of the top tours in the region, not just in Jakarta, the Borobudur World Wonder day trip is incredible. You start your tour at Soekarno-Hatta airport in Jakarta at 5:30am and fly to Jogyakarta. From here, you’ll go to the Sultan’s Palace, a batik factory, and to see Borobudur, a massive ninth century Buddhist monument and a UNESCO World Heritage center, which is absolutely stunning.
The flight alone is worth the $125 price, then when you realize it includes monuments and a UNESCO World Heritage site as well as lunch, it’s an amazing deal indeed.
