What are the top songs about football? The sport has had its share of music dedicated to the gridiron. There have been movie upon movie based on the popular American sport of football. But what about music and songs from popular artists? The songs I enjoy range from the country music opener to MNF to team raps to Freddie Mercury sitting at his piano. Either way, these songs about football certainly provide some uplifting moments for those of us who truly enjoy the game.
1) Are You Ready For Some Football, Hank Williams, Jr.
Was there ever a better song created for the ultimate football night during the business week? Hank Jr. always gets the party started with his “Monday Night Football” theme song. Faith Hill also provides her own Sunday Night opener. This Hank, Jr. song is the original song dedicated to football. It’s strictly about the NFL and one night in particular-but it still perfectly captures the atmosphere of the upcoming big game. You can catch this football themed opening for MNF here on YouTube.
2) Super Bowl Shuffle, Chicago Bears
Is there any other more classic example of a team coming together to step outside of their realm to put together a rap? Maybe some people view the 80’s song as a little corny these days. In its day, “The Super Bowl Shuffle” was a blast-even if you didn’t even like the Bears. The Chicago Bears in the mid 80’s knew they were rock solid and a potential threat to win the Super Bowl. So what did they do? They created The Super Bowl Shuffle where multiple team members danced and rapped-and yes, they did win the Super Bowl. Whether it was Walter Payton, Willie Gault or The Frig, this song about football spoke volumes about the confidence the Bears had during that magical season. “We’re not here, to start no trouble, we’re just here to do the Super Bowl Shuffle,” the Bears sung as they swayed back and forth. This particular YouTube clip of the Super Bowl Shuffle has over 1 million views.
3) We Will Rock You(We Are The Champions), Queen
This song isn’t necessarily about football-but you wouldn’t know that considering it has played at many Super Bowl and National Championship events over the years when the champ is crowned. The song probably has trickled down and been played at the majority of state high school championships as well. Little did Freddie Mercury know that his song would resonate with so many people in the world of sports-particularly in football. The lyrics speak directly of sports starting with the line “I paid my dues”. That just symbolizes the hard work and dedication it takes to win a championship. From that point on, it’s easy to tell this song can easily be related to the game of American football or any other sport. This particular clip on YouTube of Queen performing the “We are the Champions” part has over 18 million hits.
4) I Gotta Feeling, Black Eyed Peas
“I gotta feeling, that tonight’s gonna be a good night,” says the Black Eyed Peas. This song has become a sports anthem for many sports including football. Did the Black Eyed Peas anticipate the song would be used at football games and other sporting events everywhere? It’s the ultimate pre kick-off song for a football game. Just as the crowd is getting hyped, the Black Eyed Peas songs whips the crowd into a frenzy. While this song isn’t necessarily about football, it certainly has figured its way into the sports world. If you are not convinced “I Gotta Feeling” works with football, check out this YouTube video featuring the Florida State football team.
5) Heart of a Champion, Nelly
This song works well with just about any sport. It can obviously work well with the sport of football considering the lyrics talk about the heart of a champion. This song can be found multiple times on YouTube attached to football videos. Check out this clip which includes various football from NFL teams with “Heart of A Champion”.
“I can feel my ring coming,” can apply to many sports–but NFL football players often mention getting a ring as the ultimate goal.
That’s it for my list of top songs about football. There are many other songs that can relate to the football world but not that many that directly talk about the game. It’s amazing that the sport of football hasn’t provoked more lyrics concerning the game(or at least not many have been released as successful hits). I think it’s only a matter of time before more songs about football are written and become popular.
