I live in Toronto. This year I had one of the most glamorous experiences in my life – I attended Toronto Fashion Week. Toronto is considered the capital of fashion in Canada, and our fashion week here takes place twice a year, spring and fall, and it’s definitely the most important fashion event in Toronto throughout the year. The official name of Toronto Fashion Week is LG Fashion Week Beauty by L’Oreal Paris, and as the title suggests, LG and L’Oreal are the major sponsors of the event, with other sponsors teaming.
Up to a year and a half ago I didn’t even know there was a fashion week taking place in Toronto. I found out about it by pure chance. One day (I remember it happening in March 2009), out of sheer curiosity, I wondered if there was any fashion week happening in Toronto and I googled Toronto Fashion Week. The results returned by Google showed me that Toronto Fashion Week was taking place in our city that very week, and it was its last day on that very day I googled it. I was so disappointed, looking at my computer screen, and thinking why didn’t I have this curiosity 2 weeks earlier, when I still could organize myself to buy a ticket for Toronto Fashion Week and attend it? So I promised myself to attend Toronto Fashion Week in the future.
Now that Toronto Fashion Week is a bi-annual event, the next one took place last fall, in October 2009. But at that time it was out of question for me to attend it, due to the fact that my baby was only one month old. So my chance to attend this fabulous event came this year, in March. Last spring’s fashion week in Toronto lasted for 5 days – March 28 to April 1, 2010. I couldn’t possibly attend all the shows in the fashion week, but I was determined to attend at least one of them.
The most prominent Canadian designer who shows his new collections during each Toronto Fashion Week is David Dixon. He is the golden boy of Canadian fashion, the pearl in the fashion industry in Canada. He is young and very talented, his works are really innovative, and I admire his fashion very much. Other Canadian designers and brands who showed their collection during last spring’s Toronto Fashion Week were Linda Lundstrom, Pink Tartan, Saniya Khan, Pat McDonagh, Katrina Tuttle, Sears, Joe Fresh Style.
I wanted to attend David Dixon’s show for this fashion week, but when I got around to buy a ticket for his show, it was sold out, which didn’t actually surprise me. So I chose Linda Lundstrom’s show to attend instead.
I went to see Linda Lundstrom’s show with a friend of mine. The show presented the new trends for Fall/Winter 2010-2011. The collection was absolutely fabulous. What I liked the most about Linda Lundstrom’s collection was that it was ready-to-wear, and not haute-couture. Each of those outfits showed off on the runway were actually wearable in day-to-day life. While watching the show, I was picturing myself wearing this outfit in the office, that outfit at a party, this outfit at a wedding, that outfit on a night out, and so on. I absolutely loved the show and the collection.
When you live in a city which has its own fashion week, it’s absolutely a must to attend it, at least once. I’m extremely glad I had this opportunity. The next fashion week in Toronto is coming soon, October 18-23, and it will show off spring 2011 collections. I haven’t made up my mind to attend it yet, considering my family responsibilities. I would love to go to Toronto Fashion Week in the future too, and next time when I have this opportunity I will attend David Dixon’s fashion show for sure.
