Last month, I was given the opportunity to let my son review an online writing program called Time4Writing, as part of my voyage upon The Old Schoolhouse Review Crew.
Now, let me just say that my son was less than thrilled at this prospect only because he struggles with writing. Give him something concrete to work with and he will sail through with no problems but given an abstract assignment, he loathes working on it or dealing with it in any way.
Time4Writing offers several courses for elementary, middle school, and high school aged children. Seeing as how my son is in his high school years, we went with a high school paragraphs class that is to last eight weeks. We have not completely finished the course as of this review but only have two weeks to go, so we have a great grasp on the program, what it has offered and how well it has worked in our homeschooling schedule.
As I stated before, Time4Writing offers many different courses for different ages but we will be focusing upon the high school paragraphs course, as that is the one we chose to review.
The course outline is as follows:
• Week 1 – The beginning – What makes a paragraph?
• Week 2 – The Middle – Supporting Sentences in your Paragraph.
• Week 3 – The End – Concluding Sentences
• Week 4 – The Narrative Paragraph
• Week 5 – The Descriptive Paragraph
• Week 6 – The Expository Paragraph
• Week 7 – The Persuasive Paragraph
• Week 8 – It’s a Party!
“This eight-week course focuses on the fundamental unit of essays and reports: the paragraph. Students will learn the parts of the paragraph (topic, supporting, and concluding sentences) and the types of paragraphs (narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive).” *from the website*
This eight week course will cost you $99.00 but if you break that down it will only cost $12.38 per week. I don’t think that is a bad price at all considering the foundations that are being laid through this course.
The course started out with baby steps, which was a great way to get things rolling. This allowed for my son to get into the groove and learn what the teacher expected of him through this course.
I loved the fact that most of what the teacher of the course was stating are things that we had already discussed in the previous year, so it was reinforcing what had already been taught to my son. My son also realized, as many teenagers do, that maybe mom does know what she is talking about.
The course work for each week was fairly easy for him to accomplish within a weeks’ time. The course was laid out with assignments that needed to be completed for that week. However, if there is a writing assignment involved, the instructor asks that the student wait on feedback from that assignment before moving on.
My son quickly found out why it is not a good idea to move on. The instructor for the course critiques the writing assignments and if she feels you can benefit from making changes to the assignment, the student is given that opportunity. I loved this because the instructor is allowing for mistakes to be corrected and mastery of skills to be developed before moving on, which stays true to the Homeschoolers attitude towards learning.
The course was great overall and my son has not had to many problems with getting started on his course work or staying motivated thanks to the easy to use format of the course and his wonderful instructor.
I would like to say that this program has been more time intensive than I would have liked only because I had not planned this much time into our English studies this year. We were going to focus more on literature rather than essays, mechanics, etc for this year so this course does take a rather large commitment of time.
We would like to say thank you to Time4Writing and all those involved with this review. The support staff at Time4Writing was very friendly and the instructor always spoke very carefully about each assignment so as to not discourage writing but encourage.
For more information on Time4Writing, any of the other programs they offer or their sister site Time4Learning visit them in their niche out in cyber space.
*I was given a free eight week course for my son to use and complete in exchange for my honest thoughts and opinions on the product of my choice. This is also a part of the TOS review crew and you can read what my other crew mates had to say by visiting the Crew Blog.*
