Ever thought of traveling as a female alone? It can be done, just make sure to make some simple adjustments and precautions before you go out.
Make sure a family, friend, or roommate knows where you are going and when you will be back.
This sounds excessive, but if you have ever been lost is a foreign country you know that having an escape plan and help is a good idea.
Know the layout of the area.
Do you know where you are going? How to get there? And more importantly-how to get back? Make sure you know the directions.
Be wary of bars and clubs.
Drinking on a vacation is always nice, but if you are alone, try to meet up with fellow travelers or find them at a hostel. There is safety found in numbers and as a girl alone, safety is a must.
Carry a cell phone.
Lost? In trouble? Both issues can be solved with a phone call. Bring a phone with you as a deterrent for the would-be assailant as well as a way to get help if needed.
Do not get excessively drunk.
Believing in the generosity and goodness of human nature is one thing, getting drunk and wandering the streets alone. Know the people you are with and don’t take unnecessary risks.
Get out of situations that make you uncomfortable.
If it feels off, it probably is. If you are ever in any situation that makes you uncomfortable, get out of it. It may turn out that you would have been fine, but when you are alone always go by your instinct. I have been in places in Mexico where, although I had already paid for a night in a hotel, the surrounding area felt off and I left before night fall. If you are not comfortable, leave.
Finally, if you are not going to follow any of the tips above, at least follow this last one. Although my feminists friends would argue, I think it is fair to say that if you choose to travel somewhere where you know it is not going to be safe, look less attractive and try not to look like you are carrying any source of wealth. Although it is not fair to have to appear less attractive in order to stay safe, it does help. When I know I am traveling somewhere that seems sketchy, I always wear my favorite pair of loose tattered old jeans and a T-shirt with no jewelery. If it looks like you have nothing for a thief to steal, they may not try. Follow these tips and tricks when you are traveling as a girl alone and if you can-bring a friend.
