The first thing you need to do is to strengthen your abdominals and lose excess body fat. Nothing thwarts beautiful abs more than lumpy, pudgy rolls of doughy fat and the only way to get to the sleek and elegant abs is to remove that. Do sit ups, about one hundred each night, and try to be consistent in this exercise. This will take a lot of time and devotion on your part because losing excess weight is no simple or quick matter if you intend to do it in a healthy way. By no means, do not starve yourself, but try to take up a healthy and good diet. Eat healthy foods, avoid fats and sugars and sodas, and soon you will see that you have shed those extra pesky pounds and have taken the first step to shedding abs successfully.
Now, you need to focus on your ability to build strong abdomen muscles. As mentioned before, the best way is to do sit ups, or crunches. You need to force yourself to strengthen your core muscles and to have your abs balance your spine so that you feel tension and strenuous activity occurring in your lower abdominal regions. Do not place both hands behind your head, instead stretch them out in front of you as far as they will go. This will prevent you from causing stress or tension around your neck and head as you make your way up and back down.
If stretching your arms out in front of you feels as though your balance is in peril, then cross them across your chest. As you lift yourself off the floor, you will feel a stretching occurring in your abs. This is the way that the definition occurs and the muscle strengthening process begins. Feeling a bit of tightness there is good if you are just starting out. You will feel it loosen up with time. Be aware of your breathing and make sure that you inhale and exhale as you sit up and go back down.
In addition to doing sit-ups, bicycle crunches can also help define and tone your abs. You can alternatively lift your legs up in the air and pretend to be pedaling. Also alternate the times your knees touch, and bring your right knee to your left elbow and your left knee to your right elbow. Lifting your legs and keeping them straight out and lowering them without letting them touch the floor puts good pressure on your abs and helps strengthen and define them.
Another way to tone your muscles is to perform squats. This will also work out your legs if done properly and in addition to helping make your ab muscles strong and defined, you will also find yourself losing extra pounds if you keep up this regimen regularly. Be sure that your core muscles are working in sync with the rest of your body so that your legs are perfectly balancing your spine.
Working out your abs and strengthening them will eventually result in sharply defined and well trimmed abs.
