This past Saturday, Aug. 21, Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer were wed in a private ceremony held in a Malibu home, inside a private resident’s backyard. The couple was open about their involvement with each other, and thus was happy to announce their engagement last year in August. It was only a matter of time before this True Blood onscreen couple decided it was time to take the next step in their relationship and get married. Much like Sookie (Paquin) and Bill (Moyer), other shows have united actors and actresses who fall in love and get married, such as Dexter.
Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter were married on New Years Eve in 2008, ringing in the New Year as a married couple. They kept their relationship a secret up until they eloped and got married in California. Unlike the characters in True Blood that Paquin and Moyer portray, Dexter (Hall) and Debra (Carpenter) are in no way romantically involved, since they are siblings on the show.
Though Hall and Carpenter kept their relationship a secret, Dexter continued on, with the two forging separate relationships with different characters on the show. Deb in this past season broke up with Anton (David Ramsey) to be with FBI Agent Lundy (Keith Carradine), who died after only a few episodes in season four. Hall dated Rita (Julie Benz) on the show and had a fling with Lila (Jamie Murray) during season two before he killed her and married Rita, who died in the season four finale. Could this be a coincidence of great, unpredictable writing to kill off the love interests, or convenience to maintain both Hall and Carpenter’s wedded bliss?
In the case of True Blood, Sookie and Bill are onscreen lovers with scenes that involve steamy flashbacks of Bill having sex with Lorena (Mariana Klaveno), his “maker,” and Sookie involved in sex dream sequences that involve Eric (Alexander Skarsgard), another attractive vampire. True Blood is by no means prudish when it comes to sex, as fans can bare witness to. Season three did slow down a bit with the dream sequences in which Eric and Sookie are seen either naked together or in a passionate kiss. Bill has also lacked in flashbacks that involved him having sex with Lorena, or anyone else for that matter. But the characters have not been cut off completely, as it seems Hall and Carpenter’s characters have been.
Season four of True Blood, if it keeps true to the book, Dead to the World by Charlaine Harris, will call for much tolerance from Moyer, since Sookie and Bill will break up by the end of season three, which is currently playing on HBO. Paquin and Skarsgard’s characters will become romantically involved, which will include a lot of passionate kissing, nudity, and onscreen sex next season. It will be a test to Paquin and Moyer’s love for each other how professional these two are in their ability to separate truth from fiction, since their onscreen romance will be halted. Or perhaps they will alter the story to better suit the newly weds, as it seems the writers for Dexter have done. Either way, Dexter has prevailed as a dominating Showtime program, despite Hall and Carpenter’s marriage. Thus, HBO’s True Blood should be able to continue steaming up television sets, proving that married co-stars aren’t a deadly bite to storylines.
