Psychologists all over are most likely not too surprised about the reports that two of the Gosselin sextuplets have been expelled from school for their behavior. Children live what they learn, and the Gosselin children have not exactly been sheltered from the public and private battles of their parents. Not to mention the fact that Jon and Kate Gosselin’s eight children have had cameras following them for years for their reality show and who knows what they have been exposed to.
Nannies, cameramen, production people and others have been a part of the norm for these children because of the reality show that has documented their lives. What goes on that we don’t see on television? What have these children been exposed to?
Reportedly, Alexis and Colin Gosselin have been expelled for fighting with other children, calling them names that children their age should not even have in their vocabulary and basically, being bullies. Sounds like two very troubled children. Last year, another sextuplet was expelled for two weeks for hitting other children. The behavior must have been quite regular for a school to expel them.
When children behave in aggressive ways, there are reasons behind their behavior. No one is surprised by this latest report about the Gosselin children. Many might wonder what took so long?
Anyone who has seen an episode of Kate Plus 8 or the family’s previous reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8, witnessed frequent arguments between the parents and the complete chaos that was often present in their home.
As a mother of a large family whose children were not multiples but close in age, I can admit that there were chaotic times in my household also. It takes a lot of patience to raise children and the more children that you have, the more patience you need to find. The difference is that there were not cameras filming my children’s meltdown or my frustrations with my husband.
It is always sad when a family unit breaks due to divorce, but when the children continue on a reality show, one wonders where the benefit to these children is by continuing to exploit their life.
Kate Gosselin has been criticized for allowing her “fame” to go to her head and others defend her as a single mom who is just trying to make a living. Kate used to be a nurse. Since her reality show helped in part to destroy her marriage, why not learn from that experience and go back to a regular life?
It is true that many marriages break up due to the strain of raising multiples. Jon and Kate chose to have sextuplets. They were already parents to twins when Kate became pregnant. Becoming pregnant with sextuplets is not a “whoops”. It takes a strong relationship to deal with the financial and emotional burdens of raising a large family. Perhaps their relationship was not strong enough at that time and the pressures only weakened it. Having a reality show that put them in the spotlight probably made things tougher.
Learning how to adjust to life after divorce is difficult for children who are not in the spotlight. These children have had to transition from a reality show with both parents to a reality show with Mom only. In the meantime, what kind of counseling did they receive to help them to deal with the normal reactions to divorce?
It seems to a lot of people that Jon and Kate were too busy bashing each other publicly to tend to the emotional needs of their 8 children. Neither Jon nor Kate was shy about airing their dirty laundry and publicly bashing the mother/father of their children. Didn’t it ever occur to them that their children could someday easily read or hear about what they were saying about the other one?
A child who feels the need to call others nasty names and pick on their classmates is a child who is crying out for help and for attention. Is anyone listening to these children’s cry for help? So until Kate finds another school to take these two children to they will be home schooled. Probably the responsibility will fall on the nannies.
What are the Gosselin children going to be like when they hit the rebellious teenage years?
