Families who are visiting “Yellowstone National Park” for the first time should consider participating in two different, age appropriate programs that are educational, entertaining and rewarding.
They are the “Junior Ranger Program” and the “Young Scientist Program.”
Junior Ranger Program
“Yellowstone National Park’s Junior Ranger Program” includes a ranger guided program, nature hike and activities that take visitors throughout the park.
The “Junior Ranger Program” is for children between the ages of 5 through 12. The cost of participation is $3.00 per child and includes an “Official Yellowstone Junior Ranger Patch” that is awarded upon completion of the program.
Completion of the “Yellowstone National Park’s Junior Ranger Program” involves having the child complete a 12 page, age appropriate, activity paper that can be gathered from any one of the park’s visitor centers.
Families visiting during the winter months whose children are participating in the Junior Ranger Program can opt to sign out a “Junior Ranger Snow Pack.” The “Junior Ranger Snow Pack” includes items that are useful in the completion of the 12 page activity paper.
Young Scientist Program
In addition to the “Junior Ranger Program” the park offers a “Young Science Program” for those ages 5 and older.
The cost of participation in the “Young Scientist Program” is $5.00 per person and includes an “Official Young Scientist Patch” or “Young Scientist Key Chain” upon completion of a self-guided booklet. The booklets vary by age group and visitor center.
The two visitor centers that have the “Young Scientist” self-guided booklets are the “Old Faithful” and “Canyon” centers. The “Old Faithful Visitor Center” however, is the only one of the two that has the self-guided books for children ages 5 through 9.
To assist in the completion of the booklets families can opt to check out a “Young Scientist Tool Kit” which contains items needed to conduct the simple, scientific experiments listed in the books such as a thermometer.
Hours of Operation and Fees
The park is open daily year round. Fees vary and include 7 days worth of park access.
