Several sources spoke with People magazine regarding Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei, the two individuals whose actions resulted in Tyler Clementi taking his own life. Clementi, an 18-year-old student at Rutgers University, jumped off the George Washington Bridge when he learned that roommate Dharun Ravi streamed a sexual encounter of him with another man on the internet.
Ravi and his friend, Molly Wei are the two students responsible for taping Clementi’s sexual encounter. Apparently, Ravi who is an Arts and Sciences student went to Wei’s dorm room after leaving his webcam on in his and Clementi’s dorm room. From Wei’s room, Ravi logged onto his Skype account and recorded the encounter.
However, as malicious and upsetting as the crime is, there are apparently people who know Ravi and Wei and feel they are not true criminals.
For example, Clara Sreeran of Ridgewood, NJ is one of Ravi’s neighbors. According to Sreeran, “He is a very good kid, very respectful. It’s just a bad mistake.”
Rayna Sua Guo has known both Ravi and Wei since the seventh grade, wrote an email to PEOPLE and stated, “I couldn’t believe that two people I had known so well for so long could do something like that.”
Guo also wrote, “They didn’t think about the consequences or rather didn’t expect their actions to result in the death of one of their peers,” but added that there really was “no excuse” for what they did.
A friend of Wei’s said, “She is one of the nicest and most caring people I know,” says one pal. “She never picks fights with anyone nor was she mean to anyone. … She’s not one of those girls who starts drama. She’s not someone who talks behind people’s backs.”
One unnamed source wrote about Wei, “It was purely an innocent prank that went completely wrong. She never set up the camera.”
