The unhealthiest Indian foods are not as unhealthy as most American foods. But if you are trying to stay on a diet, calories and fat grams add up fast if you don’t know the best foods to order at an Indian restaurant.
For the most part Indian food is extremely healthy. Indian foods include a lot of lentils (Indian Dals), rice such as Pulao and Khichari and vegetable curries.
Here are the unhealthiest Indian foods for people on a diet:
No. 1: Indian Appetizer
The unhealthiest Indian food when ordering an appetizer is Poppadums. Also known as papad in North India, Poppadums have 408 calories in a 100 gram portion and 18.6 grams of fat as well as 39.3 grams of carbohydrates. It’s a traditional Indian flatbread often served with onions, chutney or other dips. It is often baked in grease. Have only a small portion.
No. 2: Indian Main meal
The unhealthiest Indian food when ordering a main meal is the Pork Vindaloo curry which contains approximately 450 calories, depending on the recipe. Pork Vindaloo is often made with pork shoulder as well as oil. Seasonings include cumin, turmeric, red chili powder, cloves and cinnamon, which are all healthy, but they can’t make up for the fact that pork products are not health products!
Instead, have Tandoori chicken breast, which is marinated in yogurt and cooked in a tandoor or clay oven. Another great choice is chicken curry which has 11.4 grams of protein and 7.6 grams of fat.
No. 3: Indian Rice
The unhealthiest Indiana food when ordering rice is the Khichari rice with lentils because of the high calories. A 100 gram serving is 215 calories and 7.4 grams of fat compared to the boiled rice with 111 calories and 0.2 grams of fat. If you want Khichari, make sure to have it with vegetables and not other starches or fats.
No. 4: Indian Side
The unhealthiest Indian food when ordering a side is Shahi Paneer. A vegetable curry, Shahi Paneer contains 263 calories in 100 grams. Shahi Paneer is often made with cream along with dry fruits which add to the fat and calories.
Have instead the Shimla Mirch Aloo, which is a mixed vegetable dish with 93 calories and 3.4 grams of fat.
No. 5: India Dessert
The unhealthiest Indian food when ordering dessert is Shrikhand, a sweetened yogurt that has 465 calories in a 105 gram portion. Shrikhand may be made with full cream unsweetened yogurt and powdered sugar. Although divine, it’s high in calories and rich.
For the most part, the key to eating out at an Indian restaurant is portion control. A lot of Indian foods are incredibly healthy, but watch portion size and avoid the unhealthiest Indian dishes with pork, sugars and creams.
