Back in the era of quirky “Burma Shave” billboards and odd roadside architecture designed to lure tourists in from the road, there were a lot of buildings like the “Dog Park Inn” of Cottonwood, Idaho.
Alias those days are gone and the majority of those unusual buildings that once dominated the American landscape are nothing more than fond childhood memories for people like me.
Unlike the “Big Duck” in Flanders, New York and the “Benewah Milk Bottle” in Spokane, Washington the world’s largest beagle actually accepts overnight visitors.
What follows is a brief description of the “Dog Park Inn” and its’ amenities.
Dog Park Inn
Those driving along Business Highway 95 in Cottonwood, Idaho can’t help but notice the large beagle shaped building that graces the roadside.
What they are seeing is actually a unique bed and breakfast where road weary warriors can relax inside man’s best friend.
Constructed in 1997 the world’s largest beagle, known as “Sweet Willy” amongst the locals, started accepting overnight guests.
Inside the dog shaped building is hundreds of carved dogs including 26 that grace the Queen Bed headboard alone and other canine themed items like dog shaped cookies.
Some of the other “Dog Park Inn” amenities include two twin beds in the loft area which happens to be located inside the dog’s head, a refrigerator, microwave, hair dryer, clock radio, coffee maker, games, books and air conditioning.
Hours of Operation and Rates
As of 2010 an overnight stay inside “Sweet Willy” is $86.00 plus tax for single occupancy and $92.00 plus tax for double occupancy. Each additional guest adds another $8.00 plus tax to the bill.
The room rate is inclusive of an expansive continental breakfast that features the hosts’ specialty, a “Prairie Granola” that is sinfully delicious. They also make a pretty mean list of dishes from locally grown rhubarb as well.
Advance reservations are needed anyway and must be secured with either a major credit card or cash deposit. Would be guests should also be mindful that there is a one week cancellation policy and failure to adhere to it will result in the loss of one’s full deposit.
Hours of operation and rates are subject to change without notice therefore those interested in staying at the “Dog Park Inn” should contact the owner’s directly in advance to confirm all details.
Other Activities Available On-Site
In addition to the funky overnight accommodations the “Dog Park Inn” features a unique gift shop and chainsaw art gallery that are definitely worth at least a once over. The gift shop and gallery are open daily year round from 11:00 am until 4:00 pm.
