You can turn an ordinary box of cake mix into a delicious, gourmet style cake simply by adding some tasty ingredients to the cake mix. It’s a cheater’s way to turn a box mix into a cake that tastes like it’s made from scratch!
Crushed Pineapple: Skip the water that the mix calls for and use canned crushed pineapple instead. Your cake will come out super moist, much like the texture of a sweet muffin.
Coconut Flakes: Add up to 1 cup of coconut flakes to any boxed cake mix for a chewy, moist texture. You do not have to omit any of the other ingredients.
Shredded Carrots: Shredded carrots are not just for carrot cake. You can add up to 1 cup of shredded carrots to any cake. The carrots add moistness to the batter.
Chocolate Chips: You can add chocolate chips to any cake mix to make the cake gooey and super moist. You can also use butterscotch chips, white chocolate chips, peanut butter chips or any flavored morsels you can find. Add up to 1/2 cup per box of cake mix.
Candy Bars: Break up your favorite candy bars into small pieces and add it to your cake batter after you have beaten the batter. Try any type of candy bar you want. They are all delicious! Add one or two candy bars per box of cake mix.
Soda: You can add any flavor of soda in place of the water that the mix calls for. The soda will add a burst of flavor to the cake.
Chocolate Syrup: If you want an extra chocolatey chocolate cake, add chocolate syrup in place of the water. Use the kind of chocolate syrup that you buy to make chocolate milk. This method of cake baking is for serious chocolate addicts only.
Oatmeal: If you want a heavy cake full of substance, add 1/2 cup of old fashioned dry oatmeal to the mix before you beat it.
Seeds: You can add up to 1/2 cup of any type of seed, such as sunflower seeds, poppy seeds, sesame seeds or even pumpkin seeds to your cake mix. Just fold them in after you beat the mix.
Cayenne Pepper: A dash of cayenne pepper will bring out the flavor of any cake mix, but it is especially good in chocolate cake.
One Less Egg: If you want your cake to be more moist and more dense, use one less egg than the mix calls for.
