While the idea of the working college student conjures up images of slaving away at Taco Bell or another restaurant for minimum wage, scrubbing pots and mopping floors, there are other ways to put yourself through college. Here are a couple ideas.
For anyone with a writing bent, freelance writing is an educational and often better-paying method to make some spare change than working in a restaurant. Many newspapers and magazines in the country take freelance work, and some of it pays quite well. Personally, the highest-paying assignment I have gotten was a $700 article plus photo for a large newspaper. You can also hit up all your local media outlets to see who will take freelance work.
What’s more, freelance writing will also help you improve your writing skills, which will be useful for many careers. If you are a college student thinking of entering a writing-related career, then freelance writing is something you should consider as a way to make some extra money.
Another way to make some extra money is to sell books online. I’ve done this through Amazon marketplace since high school to some success. The way I’ve done this is by frequenting used book sales, especially at the local library, and picking up bargain books that sell for more money online.
Large, hardcover nonfiction books and textbooks can often be picked up for cheap at these kinds of sales, and sold at the higher going rate online. It is a bit tricky to determine which books will fetch a higher price and which won’t: you might want to look up the going prices of certain books on Amazon marketplace before you buy them at a book sale.
However, I’ve bought plenty of books for less than $5 that I was later able to sell for $50 or more online. It is definitely something worth looking into for college students looking to make some extra money.
Finally, the best way for a college student to make some good money is to become an entrepreneur in whatever is their specialty. For instance, computer whizzes that I know have been able to make a nice chunk of change designing websites for clients, while a student who is knowledgeable about landscaping has been able to start a thriving small business mowing lawns and doing landscaping for neighbors.
Whatever is your talent and interest, find a way to start working in that field while you are in college. This will not only help you make some extra money, but it will also give you a head start in your career.
