If you are hanging around Fulton Ferry and looking for something to do in the next few weeks, you might want to check out Galapagos Art Space which, at 16 Main Street, is right on the official dividing line between Fulton Ferry and DUMBO.
Galapagos Art Space is a bit of a misleading name. Its not mis-named because it is very much a space full of art, but it is not exactly what you might imagine when you think “art space.”
Its something a bit more akin to a artsy Club that hosts some real edgy-performances as well as kick-ass parties (Like GUMBO, which stands for Gay in DUMBO). The venue is also stunningly unique, sporting a huge 1,600 square foot indoor “lake” over which walkways crisscross between small islands with tables and seating (depending on the event). Check out the Gallery here.
Besides the unique and fascinating venue, Galapagos hosts a wide range of performances, parties, and lectures. Check out this selection of upcoming events.
Dot Dot Dot – 7pm Oct 27th – MFA Interaction Design Lecture Series, in partnership with School of Visual Arts. “Practitioners and thought leaders” in the field of interior design will give short talks and discussisons.
Murder Poses: Murder as Artistic Performance – 9pm Oct 28th – We can only assume this performance does not include actual murder. “Using projection, audio and live performance,” this performance will likely be quite powerful as well as possibly quite disturbing, but certainly memorable, either way.
The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus Open Variety Night – 8pm Nov 1st – with “tap dancing bears, Kung Fu juggling, clown bands, aerialists suspended above your beverage while you are carefully suspended over a body of water, sword swallowers, physical comedy, contortionists, and cowboys.” Should be interesting.
