While struggling through my first month of writing for Associated Content and trying to figure out how to increase page views, I happened across the Google Insights website. Using this powerful tool has helped me focus my topics and keywords to target audiences and capture more clicks.
Selecting article topics
One way to increase your page views is to use Google Insights to narrow down your topics to those which web searchers are most interested in. The site allows you to enter up to five search terms at a time and shows, on a graph, how interest in the different categories compare. For example, if you’re trying to decide between writing about water conservation or energy conservation, type both of those terms into Google Insights and see how they compare in popularity.
Another great feature Google Insights offers to help increase your page views is its ‘search terms’ section, shown at the bottom of the page after you’ve initiated a category search. Once you input the topic you’re considering to write about, Google Insights will tell you exactly what search terms people are entering in that category.
I used this technique when honing the title and key words for my article “18 Water Conservation and Energy Saving Tips for Your Home”. A search in the category of energy conservation showed that ‘energy saving’ is more popular of a search term than ‘energy conservation’, so I used ‘energy saving’ throughout the article to draw in more readers.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
The common term used for enhancing an article’s search-ability is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If you become familiar with SEO, and how Google Insights can help, you’ll have no problem attracting more readers to your articles.
