With the economy suffering the way it has, many families have been finding it difficult to heat and light up their home. There are many organizations, both public and private, which offer low-income families assistance with their utility bills in Milwaukee. Some organizations also help families update their home’s appliances and structure to help with long term savings that will help lower monthly utility bills.
Low-Income Rate Assistance
Funding for low-income households is available through a Public Benefits Fund that was created to help families utility bills, both gas and electric. The State of Wisconsin uses these funds to help families without the ability to maintain the proper household necessities. Assistance is offered as a last resort for those facing the loss of heating to their home due to inability to pay the bill. Those households that have exhausted all other financial resources and have a utility bill of more than 35 percent of the household’s total income are eligible for this type of assistance.
Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program
The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program offers cash grants and other assistance to those households with moderate to low income. This federally funded program not only helps with the payment of past due utility bills, but also offers assistance with weatherization of the home, making it more economically sound when it comes to utility usage.
Services offered by the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program include emergency fuel assistance, conservation and budget counseling, co-payment plans, outreach services and furnace repair and replacement.
Keep Wisconsin Warm
Keep Wisconsin Warm offers help to low income and people living in poverty for their heating and utility bills. Approval is based on the family size and amount of monthly income based on an income guideline chart approved and also used by the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program. For example a family of four with a monthly income of less than $3,756 may qualify for assistance from Keep Wisconsin Warm.
