Last night’s episode of Vampire Diaries was a doozy. The second season of episode two entitled “Brave New World” certainly lived up to its name. As if seeing Caroline suffocated in the season premiere wasn’t enough, at the very first part of the episode she awakens in a hospital bed. My wife and I had decided either Katherine didn’t finish the job or a major character had just become an undead vampire.
Caroline now starts smoking when her skin touches sunlight. Mystic Falls just increased its vampire population by one. Caroline tests her new powers in bold move as she feeds off a hospital nurse to escape. Caroline’s whole new existence as a vampire is just starting. After she escaped, my wife and I just looked at each other sideways and said “uh-oh.”
Meanwhile Elena is pining away for her beloved Stefan which has become my wife’s favorite aspect of the show. My teenage daughter also likes the romance factor.
Caroline intercedes on Elena’s behalf. Now she’s not the meek mortal girl that was picked on anymore. Now she’s ready for some payback. Her first target is Damon which also leads to trouble since he’s older and more powerful. To say the fight scene was intense is an understatement. Now that my wife and I are sitting forward and breathing heavily from adrenaline we’re wondering what the heck could be next.
Suddenly Damon, Elena, and Stefan are on the run and in hiding. Damon wants to destroy Caroline right away in good vampire hunter fashion with a wooden stake. Stefan and Elena intercede basically saying that it’s Damon’s fault she’s like that in the first place.
Angering a pyro isn’t the best idea either in the vampire world. Bonnie, Caroline’s best friend, also is a woman scorned and wants a piece of Damon. In the midst of burying a man that Caroline feasted upon Bonnie interrupts Damon and tries to torch him.
Even more attempted killings happen when Damon gets home. Elena’s little brother gets delusions of grandeur and tries to run a stake through Damon. It’s all in a day’s work of survival for a vampire.
Finally at the end of the episode Elena gets her moment. Stefan sweeps her away to the top of the Ferris wheel at the carnival and they have a sweet and romantic moment much to the delight of my wife and daughter.
Next week looks to delve more and more into Caroline’s issues as a newly created vampire. Hopefully her temper will be more in check otherwise Damon may not be around much longer.
