The episode starts with a serious flashback- all the way to Bulgaria in 1490. Katerina Petrova (AKA Katherine) is giving birth to a baby girl- and her parents promptly whisk the baby off before she can even hold her. Katerina cries in her mother’s arms as the baby is taken away.
Okay we all knew Katherine had to have had a baby for the Petrova family line to have carried on and thus Elena ending up a Petrova doppelganger but seeing Katerina (Katherine) as a human, crying out for her baby was a nice touch and something I didn’t see coming.
After the flashback we see Elena at Stephan’s house, who moves so Rose can pop out to tell the story of Klaus and Katerina, at least what she knows of it. Elena doesn’t seem to care; she already has plans to get to the bottom of things with Katherine, she just needs Caroline to keep Stephan distracted long enough for her to do what she needs to do.
At school Jeremy finally gets up enough courage to ask Bonnie out as they are walking through the parking lot. She seems hesitant but finally agrees, then a new kid busts their happy little bubble. Luka and Bonnie seem instantly drawn to each other. Poor Jeremy has absolutely no luck with the ladies, they keep dying on him. Finally he looks to a live one (Bonnie) and before he gets a chance to really make a move some new guy swoops in.
Elena shows up at the tomb bearing gifts of blood and Petrova heirlooms. After having Caroline remove the tomb door she kicks her out so she can be alone with Katherine. Surprisingly Katherine spills secrets with a little coaxing. Guess she really needed the blood.
We get to see more flash backs as Katherine tells her story of having a baby out of wedlock, so it was kept a secret and she was banished from Bulgaria and sent to England where she met Klaus. He was charming until she learned that he planned to drain her of blood, spilling it all over the moonstone, to break the curse. Katerina ran like hell with the help of Trevor, who was of course, in love with her.
Trevor called in the aid of his BFF Rose to harbor Katerina. Rose didn’t want to and threatened to take Katerina back to Klaus. Katerina (always looking out for herself) stabbed herself saying she’d rather die than go back to Klaus. Rose gives Katerina some of her blood to heal the wound. Trevor gets there and while they fight, Katerina hangs herself. Thus ending her human life but thanks to Rose’s blood she comes back as a vampire- which Katerina knew would happen. She orchestrated the whole thing.
Katherine went back to Bulgaria and discovered Klaus had killed her entire family- of course not the baby no one knew about.
Katherine ran off always keeping ahead of Klaus.
Rose and Trevor have been running from Klaus ever since.
At least until they all learned of Elena- which everyone wants to use to get Klaus off their backs.
Elena is disgusted by Katherine’s admissions. Katherine offers Elena a way out by slitting her wrist and offering Elena her blood, so she could escape the same way Katerina had.
Elena realizes Katherine had set up everyone to die- Elena, Caroline, Bonnie, even Tyler- the spell to break the curse needs not just the Petrova doppelganger and the moonstone but a vampire, a witch and a werewolf as well.
Meanwhile that evening Bonnie runs into Luka and his father when she’s supposed to be meeting Jeremy. Luka’s dad brings up Salem. Bonnie looks uncomfortable but thankfully Jeremy arrives. Too bad Luka doesn’t take the message and follows them to the pool table. Jeremy ends up distracted playing pool and Bonnie ends up alone with Luka at a table where he makes salt levitate. So Luka’s a witch, or warlock as he prefers to be called.
Poor Jeremy doesn’t stand a chance.
But we should know new people never show up in Mystic Falls without an agenda- so what is Luka and dear old dad’s deal? Hmmm…I guess we’ll see.
After Stefan finally breaks free of Caroline’s distraction he finally finds Elena in the tomb and tries to convince her Katherine’s been telling lies as a way to get out. Elena knows it’s all true and that Klaus is coming for her. Oddly Katherine will be safe stuck in the tomb no vampire will enter because they wouldn’t be able to get out; she mutters “I’ll be the safest bitch in town.”
Stefan takes an upset Elena home. She’s hysterical because she can no longer blame Stefan and Damon for all the bad supernatural stuff that’s happened. It’s all because of her, she’s the doppelganger and everyone wants her.
Off on another side plot Rose and Damon took a little trip to see Rose’s friend Slater- totally geek vampire who seems to know everything. They are in a little café with tempered glass so the no ring wearing vampires can sit in the sunlight without frying. That is until big bad Elijah shows up outside and breaks the glass burning Rose and Slater. Slater bolts and Damon saves Rose.
Once they get back to the Salvatore mansion Damon and Rose decide to have a few drinks. Then they decide that having sex is a good way for both of them to feel better. Damon can briefly forget about Elena and Rose can drown the sorrow of losing Trevor.
Hmm…whatever it takes to get Ian Somerhalder shirtless I’m all for it. I could definitely drown my sorrows in that man.
After Damon and Rose linger in the afterglow with little heart to heart discussion about feelings and there being no “switch” to turn off. That discussion is interrupted with a phone call from Slater. He tells Rose that he did some digging and finds that they need the moonstone and a witch to break the curse. Too bad his info is false because he is being compelled by Elijah. After the call Slater is forced to stake himself.
In a twist at the end we discover Luka’s father is there with Elijah, obviously as the witch/warlock to Elijah (maybe to several of the originals, who knows).
Arg… after all the new info and plot twists we have to wait until December 2 for the next episode.
I need to know: What is going to happen with Bonnie and Luka? Will Jeremy ever find a girl that doesn’t get killed off or hook up with someone else? Is Damon going to get over Elena thanks to Rose (doubtful)?
And what is the deal with the Petrovas, how do they really play into the whole vampire/werewolf curse thing? Gypsy curses anyone?
And how does the curse work? It was said if a vampire breaks the curse the werewolves are stuck being bound by the moon so if a werewolf breaks the curse that means the vampires are stuck with the curse of the sun? This whole curse thing is confusing.
