Although she knew it was coming, Michael Grimm’s girlfriend of three years, Lucy Zolcerova, probably thought her unassuming boyfriend would make his marriage proposal a more private affair than proposing in front of “The Ellen Degeneres Show” audience. Instead, Michael Grimm, fresh off of his $1 million win on America’s Got Talent, got down on one knee and asked that she marry him, a beaming Ellen looking on, during the taping for Friday’s episode of the popular talk show.
But he did make her wait. Grimm and Ellen discussed his final performance of Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves A Woman,” which he had dedicated to his girlfriend. He first told Degeneres of the excitement of winning America’s Got Talent and what his plans for the future were. He said that he hadn’t really thought out what he would do with a million dollars other than to get his “grandparents into a better situation.” As most who followed Michael Grimm’s progress on America’s Got Talent know, his grandparents raised him. They lost everything when Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home and hometown of Waveland, Mississippi.
But Ellen, in on the entire marriage proposal deal, called Lucy Zolcerova down from the audience after asking Grimm how long the two had been together. He told the talk show host that his girlfriend has been his “rock.” He added that it “takes a strong woman” to deal with someone in the music business.
Lucy Zolcerova, an attractive redhead, told Ellen that she was proud of her boyfriend.
“He deserves this,” she said.
Grimm prefaced his taking of the knee by saying, “Yeah, she’s been there for me. And once you find that good woman, you hang onto her.”
He then pulled her away from the guest chairs, reached into his pocket and got down on his knee. The crowd went berserk. Surprised, Lucy could be heard saying: “No you’re not!”
Michael Grimm asked, “I want you to be my wife — will you marry me?”
Giggling, hands over her mouth, she answered, “Yes.” The pair kissed and the crowd’s roar of approval only got louder.
But Michael Grimm made his intentions clear right after winning America’s Got Talent Wednesday evening. He told People magazine in a post-show interview that he was going to propose.
