Luray Caverns, located just of I-81’s Exit 264, is the largest and most popular cavern formation in the Eastern United States. It is a designated U.S. Natural Landmark and a member of the Southern Highlands Attractions organization.
The 4,000,000-year old caverns were discovered in 1878 and have been a popular tourist destination for over 130 years. One hour-long tours are conducted throughout the caverns on paved, lighted walkways at a comfortable – and constant – 54* F temperature.
Cavern sights and “must-sees” include the underground lakes, “cathedral-size” rooms with 10-story high ceilings, fantastically colored stalactites and stalagmites, and a “Great Stalacpipe Organ” that plays music using the cavern formations instead of traditional organ pipes. This feature was added, of course, prior to the modern philosophy of not affecting the underground site more than absolutely necessary.
Several other areas of interest surround the Cavern site. There is golf at the Caverns Country Club Resort and the nearby Shenandoah National Park and its miles of hiking trails. On-site, there is also a Car & Carriage Caravan Museum display showing the history of transportation since 1725; the Luray Valley Museum & Gardens depicting a farming community from the 1800’s; and an acre-sized Garden Maze. Take advantage of it all to get the most of your ticket value.
Despite being of a different and antiquarian geological era altogether, Luray Caverns has a modern and informative webpage, a Facebook page and a Twitter account.
