Shenandoah Caverns, located 2 minutes from I-81’s Exit 269, is billed as a “Family of Attractions.” This means that there is a cavern in addition to three other “tourist draws” and that the latter will probably entertain children and their limited attention spans more easily.
Shenandoah Caverns is also billed with American Celebration on Parade, the Yellow Barn, and Main Street of Yesteryear.
Shenandoah Caverns have been a popular tourist destination since opening in 1922.
Tours are conducted throughout the caverns on paved, level, lighted, stairless walkways at a comfortable – and constant – 56* F temperature. Shenandoah Caverns are also the only cavern system equipped with elevator service. This feature was added, of course, prior to the modern philosophy of not affecting the underground site more than absolutely necessary.
Cavern sights and “must-sees” include the underground “Rainbow Lake,” “Cardross Castle,” the eerily-familiar “Capital Dome,” and the “Bacon Formations” made famous by National Geographic.
In addition to the Caverns, admission includes the three following venues:
Per the brochure, the Yellow Barn provides a child-friendly mish-mash of the following attractions:
• “Live musical performances on a rotating stage”
• A “first-hand look at farm life”
• A large selection of restored carriages and farm vehicles
• Live animal mini-farm
• An indoor beehive
• Country store gift shop
The Main Street of Yesterday is based on the now mostly past tradition of downtown stores’ Christmas window displays. According to the brochure, the displays include over a hundred animated figures, many original.
American Celebration on Parade fills 40,000 square feet of space with floats from past national and regional events, such as “the Rose Parade, Presidential Inaugurals, the Miss America Parade, and the Thanksgiving Day Parade….”
