If you are looking for an extraordinary place to spend the winter holiday season look no further than the “Chena Hot Springs Resort” in Fairbanks, Alaska.
The “Chena Hot Springs Resort” provides a cavalcade of cold inspired activities from the thrill of dog sled racing to the chill of touring the world’s largest year round ice museum; this place has it all.
A Brief Aurora Ice Museum History
Erected out of over 1,000 tons of Alaska ice, the two-story “Aurora Ice Museum” is a sight to behold.
It opened for business in January 2005 and has remained in operation ever since. A patented machine known as an “absorption chiller” keeps the ice museum at a chilly 20 degrees Fahrenheit year round.
Many of the sculptures and architectural appointments inside the building were the brainchild of a champion husband and wife ice carving team; Steve and Heather Brice.
Aurora Ice Museum Highlights
Literally everything within this frigid fantasy of ice and snow is awe inspiring. Visitors will marvel at the ever changing colors bouncing off the ice chandeliers as they ascend the spiral ice stairs to the second floor observation deck.
The undulating, colorful lights of the ice crystal chandeliers were designed to mimic those of the celebrated “Northern Lights.”
There are realistic, life sized medieval jousters on horseback seemingly frozen in time, numerous themed chambers and an ice bar that are sure to send a slew of shivers up and down one’s spine.
At the end of the guided “Aurora Ice Museum” tour visitors can chill out at the ice bar by sitting atop Caribou fur covered stools made of ice and sipping drinks in an ice carved glass.
Hours of Operation
The “Aurora Ice Museum” is open year round with daily guided tours being offered during the winter months at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm, 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm.
