While visiting Lake Geneva, Wisconsin this autumn, a helpful hotel concierge gave us a great tip for planning the perfect fall afternoon: an excursion to the Elegant Farmer in nearby Mukwonago. A half an hour jaunt through Wisconsin’s countryside delivered us to this fun and friendly farmstead where a smiley face barn sets the mood for a fantastic day.
Upon arrival we headed straight to the food tent where they were serving up chili and soup in bread bowls, BBQ pulled pork sandwiches and a yummy caramel apple dipping station. We grabbed some grub and enjoyed our home cooked lunch atop hay bale chairs, of all things.
Next, we made our way over to the Elegant Farmer store which is a large lofty barn loaded with decadent treats, a full sized deli, free samples and more. We browsed the aisles for salad dressings, soups, breads, gourmet popcorn, cider, muffins, cookies and world renowned, lip-smacking paper bag baked apple pies.
After filling our bellies and our car trunk with delicious homemade goodies, we embarked upon a scenic tractor-pulled hayride. Rides were very reasonably priced at just $3 per adult, $1 for children under 11 and free for kids under 3 years old. Our hayride made two stops, including a trip to the apple orchard where we were invited to pick from several varieties and even sample a few apples for free. The next stop on our tractor towed trip was to a picturesque hilltop pumpkin patch. We discovered pumpkins of all shapes and sizes and even took a few home for under $10.
Upon returning form our hayride, we hit the Doughnut Shack to taste the most delectable warm apple cider doughnuts this side of southeast Wisconsin. Doughnuts cost just a dollar each and go great with hot or cold spiced cider; however the shack sells ice cold milk as well.
The Elegant Farmer also features an on-site vintage train depot boasting old fashioned trolley rides through the forest and into nearby East Troy and back. Tickets are $12 for adults, $11 for senior citizens, $7 for kids ages 3 to 11 and free for 2 and under.
The Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago, Wisconsin hosts special events all year long like: All Things Cherry in February, Maple Fest in March, Old Fashioned Farm Fair in July, Just Peachy Days in August and Santa Train and Midnight Magic in December, to name just a few.
