Considered to be the only rehabilitation hospital for ill and injured sea turtles in the state of Georgia, the “Georgia Sea Turtle Center” of Jekyll Island is a wonderful place for those interested in learning about our oceans and some of its’ celebrated creatures.
Visitors to the “Georgia Sea Turtle Center” can learn firsthand about the life cycle of sea turtles through a variety of interactive exhibits and activities such as taking a nest walk.
According to the “Georgia Department of Natural Resources Coastal Division” from May until Mid-August an estimated annual 1,300 sea turtle nests are created along Georgia’s coast.
Hours of Operation
The “Georgia Sea Turtle Center” is open year round and maintains seasonal hours of operation. March through November it is open on Mondays from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm and Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm.
December through February it is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. The center is closed on some major holidays and has special hours on others. Therefore it is best to call in advance of one’s trip to confirm details.
As of 2010 general admission to the “Georgia Sea Turtle Center” is $6.00 per adult and $4.00 per child between the ages of 4 through 12. Children ages 3 and under are admitted into the center for free.
General admission includes a self guided tour of the facility’s interactive exhibit gallery and rehabilitation pavilion.
Podcasts that correspond with the exhibit gallery and rehabilitation pavilion portions of the self-guided tour can be downloaded off of the “Georgia Sea Turtle Center” website.
There are separate charges for the various special events and educational programs such as the turtle walk, nest walk and sea turtle camp.
Visitors should be mindful of the fact that admission, special and educational program fees are subject to change at any given time without advance notice.
Furthermore, participation in special and educational programs is subject to availability, age appropriateness, seasonal and weather fluctuations.
Special Events and Educational Programs
The ever popular “Georgia Sea Turtle Center’s” twice nightly evening turtle walks are generally available from June 1st until July 31 with the exception of the Fourth of July holiday. Advance reservations are strongly suggested and certain restrictions apply. Admission to the evening turtle walks tend to range from $6.00 to $15.00 per person.
The sea turtle nest walks are only available three days a week during sea turtle nesting season. Loggerhead sea turtle nesting season traditionally occurs from May 1st until October 31st.
Sea turtle camp is geared towards children ages 6 through 12 and is generally held weekly throughout the month of June. Advance reservations should be made well in advance and parents can expect to pay upwards of $150.00 or more per child.
Other special events held at the “Georgia Sea Turtle Center” throughout the year include but are not limited to; “Shell-E-Brate Earth Day”, “Nest Fest”, “Turtleween”, “Sea-sons Greetings” and “Teacher Open House.”
