You finally get out from under the roof owned by your parents and you go for almost exactly the same design conventions that you grew up loathing. Remember some of the things you said you’d do when you got your own house? Well, there you are inside your own house and it may as well belong to your neighbor or another person with your name who lives on the other side of the country. It’s time to get wacky and whimsical with interior design.
A bare wall is still a bare wall even if it’s painted in vibrant color. If you really want to get your wall noticed, then choose four colors you love and paint two thick wavy lines all across the walls. On the top of the upper wavy line you paint the wall space the exact same color as the ceiling. Below the bottom wavy line you paint the same color as your rug or flooring.
Remember how much you loved polka dots when you were a kid? Well, at heart you are still that kid. Paint your walls in various sized, brilliantly colored polka dots. Vary the sizes so that enormous polka dots contrast with smaller dots; like when a basketball player dates a cheerleader.
Paint or tile the floor in a perfect checkerboard pattern that can also be used for chess. Now either make or go out and buy life-sized chess pieces that, when you aren’t playing life-size chess, are used for decoration in other parts of the house.
Pretty in Pink:
Pink ain’t just for little girls. Many great punk rock albums and 12-inch singles featured a color scheme that exploited pink. Allow pink to take over your kitchen. A bright pink makes it a joy to walk into the kitchen. But there’s the deal. You aren’t just painting your cabinets pink. Paint the refrigerator and the stove the same pink as you paint the cabinets. Offset the overwhelming effect with a black stovetop and vent hood for a punky look or with a white stovetop and vent hood for a more girly effect.
Tin Ceiling Rusted….Not!
A tin ceiling provides an immediate sense of a different time and even a different place. Tin ceiling came of decorative age during the Gilded Age in the 1800s. Although called tin ceiling, the material may be copper, bran or steel that are available in a wide variety of styles. Your first time out putting up a tin ceiling, you should tackle as little space as possible. Go for a tin ceiling in the kitchen or dining room and then you can decide if you want the unique effect to cover the living room or bedrooms.
Stencil Inspiration Messages
Grab some alphabet stencils and some paint and transform you entire house or just one room into permanent life coach without having to put up with all that excess energy those life coaches seem to have either naturally or medically. You can stencil the floor just as easy as the wall if you have hard flooring. The actual words of inspiration that you stencil will depend on what you need motivation to do. Stencil the titles of famous novels if you need motivation to write the Great American Novel. Stencil slogans that appeal to your desire to drop 20 pounds. See, that’s the great thing about painting stencils: you can also paint over them on the wall or toss a rug over them if you are tired of being told you are a winner.
