There are many ways to go green! Whether you want to do the most you can without spending much money, or if you are willing to spend some money to eventually save you some money. No matter what part you decide to take, it is all going to help our environment and the future of our planet earth. Partake in as many of these earth saving activities as much as you feel comfortable doing in your life.
Lets first take a look at the meaning of an ecological footprint. We all have one and everything we do with our belongings or what we eat has an impact on our environment. It’s the decisions on how we live our life that can make a difference. An ecological footprint is quite important to look into if you have a few minutes to spare. There is a test at this website Footprint It will help you realize just how many planet earths we would need if everyone lived your lifestyle into the future. It is only estimated and may sound a bit dramatic, but seems right since the concerns are high with our waste management system.
We can reduce our ecological footprint and help the environment in the best way we can by just making some small changes at a time. The more we do obviously, the better for our environmental future. So here are some ideas to look into and then you can decide what you are willing to do. Some changes are obvious and some you may not have known mattered.
Walking, jogging, biking, skateboarding/long boarding, or any other means of transport that doesn’t require a mechanical means such as a vehicle is going to be great for the environment. If at all possible we should try to do this because then this is less emissions of pollution, using less resources such as oil, gas, and anything else required to maintain a vehicle.
If a vehicle of some sort must be used for traveling anywhere, then you must maintain your vehicle the best way possible. If your vehicle is running properly, then this helps your vehicle produce less emissions. Also making sure there is no leaks that may drip where ever you drive or park is also another safe way to care about the environment.
Adopt water saving activities such as taking shorter showers, fixing water leaks in your home, not running the water while brushing teeth, finding ways to do dishes without filling an entire sink of water, and just being aware of what you are doing when doing water activities. Washing clothes in cold water will also help save energy.
Energy Saving ideas are easy to follow. Turning off lights and televisions, or anything for that matter that is not needed at the moment. Plugging everything into power strips is also a great way to turn off many things at once. Some things do use energy even when not in use just by being plugged in, so power strips can help reduce the energy in this case. Unplugging as many things as you can when not in use is an easy thing to adapt into your lifestyle. Turning down the temperature when you leave the house is a great way to reduce energy, or if possible turning off your heating source when you are not home. In the winter you can not turn off your heating source, but you can reduce the energy just by turning down the temperature.
Adding energy saving sources to your home if at all possible is a great way to reduce energy. Solar panels are a great resource that may cost money, but at the same time will save you money in the future. Maintain your home with seasonal adaptations such as putting plastic on your windows in the winter. Make sure your home is well insulated which will preserve the heat inside your home.
Housing in as little land as possible will help the earth by preserving the unused land. Living in apartment buildings, having roommates when possible, living in a house is alright as long as you don’t go overboard on space. This might not be an option for all due to size of families, or some people having to live alone for whatever personal reason. If you do buy acreage, hopefully you can partake in caring for the land such as planting trees.
The inside of your house is just as important. Do you really need that new furniture? I myself am guilty for buying some of it. But in as many cases as possible, we should use our things as long as we possibly can. If we need to get rid of something or need a change, we should donate or sell the gently used items. Somebody else’s trash in some cases is somebody else’s treasure. Get as many used items as you can if there is something needed in the household.
There is also options out there to trade out your clothing or other items. This is an option that I did not know existed until I researched ideas for this article. But there are many options out there such as Swap Style where you can trade clothing and items with people form all over the world. If you are sick of that old dress in your closet, then try using the option to trade it with someone else. We all know how good it feels to have a new outfit, and what a great idea to save money at the same time. Obviously there are second hand stores almost everywhere, so that is a good place to donate your items or to purchase items wanted. Trading with friends and family when possible is good too.
Maybe you are a craft person, well then instead of getting rid of that old outfit you can make it into something new. Making quilts, dolls, a new outfit, or anything else in your crafting imagination. Or maybe you know some crafters that will gladly take your used clothing. Any item that is not needed in your home can sometimes find a new home instead of being thrown away to waste.
Borrow movies, books, or anything else that can be temporarily used. If you really don’t want it in your house after it’s use, this is a great way to use it and give it back. But this idea is in a way sad too, because we have to support our artists in the world. We would hope for the same if it were us. So if you have room for such things, than please just purchase it if you feel you may want to use it more than once.
Left over food from your meals? If at all possible, start a compost to dispose of the food. But try to only make the food that is needed is better to begin with. Freezing leftovers to eat at a later time. Or making leftovers into something new for the next day. It is also mentioned the more natural products we eat is better and less meat. This reason being is the mass quantities of energy it takes to ship the items to the stores. Large quantity farming usually gets shipped somewhere when it’s in high demand. But if the demand for it goes down, the supply will go down.
Reducing waste as much as possible is the best bet for everyone. I realized by recycling that about half of my garbage is recyclable. I now send much less actual garbage to the waste management place. Because taking plastics, glass, metals/aluminum, papers/cardboard and separating it all for recycling, the garbage waste is half what it used to be. It seems like a bit of a pain at first, but when I think of how much it will help our environment it gives me a sense of accomplishment. Some places will also give you money for some of those items at a recycling center.
The big thing is that people keep buying bottled water. We should try to reduce this need as much as possible. Every year there is a huge amount of plastic bottles wasted. Even though they are recyclable, there isn’t many people who actually recycle them. The demand to make less of these bottles would be better. Pick your reusable bottle and help the demand of making plastic bottles go down. Fill your reusable bottle with tap water or drinking fountains that are found almost everywhere.
Get some green bags, which are reusable bags that you can carry to any store when you go shopping. This replaces the bags that you use. As I mentioned earlier, when demand goes down, the supply goes down.
The point is that even if you can’t do everything to live completely green in your life, making some changes can make a huge difference for the future of our world!
