Week 11 was a weird NFL week, filled with strange goings-on, bizarre behavior on field and off, and football, both good and bad. Every week of football produces a lot of NFL news, and this week was no exception.
Some of the weird NFL news and stories to emerge from week 11:
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger got punched by Raiders defensive end Richard Seymour, who was ejected from the game. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a punch thrown like this in the NFL. Scuffles and jersey grabbing, yes, and Albert Haynesworth did stomp on Andre Gurode’s head in 2006, so this shouldn’t strike me as weird, but it does.
Titans quarterback Vince Young, injured and upset after an overtime loss, threw a temper tantrum as he walked to the locker room. A Yahoo! Sports article reports he threw his shoulder pads and jersey into the stands and had another tantrum in the locker room, disrupting coach Jeff Fisher and walking out. Children who throw their toys should have them taken away and be put in time out.
Steve Johnson of the Buffalo Bills took a line from The Dark Knight and wrote “Why So Serious” on his shirt, which he displayed after scoring a touchdown. Because the NFL doesn’t allow players to have a lot of fun these days, he’ll likely be monetarily punished.
Kevin Williams, of the Minnesota Vikings, played in a jersey that had his name spelled Willaims. If the misspelling had occurred on the jersey of T.J. Houshmandzadeh or even Troy Polamalu, it would be more understandable. Or maybe that’s why it didn’t happen to one of them: everyone pays a lot of attention when writing those names. Not the weirdest of weird NFL stories, but odd.
Speaking of Troy Polamalu brings to mind the horse collar penalty wrongly called on Detroit’s Ndamukong Suh, who pulled the admittedly long hair of Dallas Cowboy Marion Barber. There’s a lot of talk about this one, because hair pulling isn’t illegal in the NFL, making this a bad call.
Here’s one for the weird NFL books: the Cowboys won their second game in a row, and their first game at home. And, they had another big play! The cowboys also got a safety, which is slightly weird, safeties not being all that common.
Brett Favre threw (another) interception, and afterwards had words on the sideline with offensive coordinator Darrel Bevell that looked a little more animated than simply conversational. Favre’s already been the focus of a great deal of talk this season, and his performance in the Vikings’ loss to Green Bay won’t stop, or even slow it down. Part of the weird in this story is that Favre isn’t being hailed as hero by a lot the people talking about him.
Vikings coach Brad Childress was fired Monday morning. Not weird NFL news, but newsworthy.
