There are plenty of good reasons a community like Noe Valley could use a town square. Throughout history, a square in the middle of town was used to host local merchants. All aspects of shared town life and culture were typically conducted in a town square.
If any place in San Francisco has shown that it loves being a tight knit community, it is Noe Valley. For this reason, I see a town square in the community as a welcome addition. Of course, you can’t have something nice without having to work for it. Although the Noe Valley Town Square committee was able to allocate local funds to pay for the city owned property, the work is hardly finished.
Once funding arrives, community labor will be needed to implement the plan. Also, community voices will need to be heard about which choices for annual events and activities are made. Long term, we can all look forward to community events organized in the square but it won’t come without getting involved and helping to get projects completed.
I can’t wait to see what ideas Noe Valley residents come up with. To get involved with the Noe Valley Town Square project, consult their website.
