What channel is the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins game on tonight in the New York City area? While there are a lot of very complex questions swirling around the New York Jets here in Week 3 of the NFL season, many are likely wondering about a very basic one and looking to see on what channel the Jets game will be.
More on that later. It’s instructive to think about why so many are planning to watch the New York Jets tonight and why they have become arguably the highest profile NFL team here early in the 2010 season.
The Jets have purposely in many ways put a bull’s-eye on their backs this year. Led by their braggadocios head coach, Rex Ryan, and fortified by their unlikely advancement to last year’s AFC championship game, the Jets came into this season proclaiming that they are the team to beat and that they expect to win the Super Bowl. Presumably partly to sell tickets and partly to create an aura around the franchise that really has not existed since Joe Namath led them to a Super Bowl win, the Jets have demanded the spotlight.
In a league where coaches and players tend to try and lower expectations, and profiles, at every turn, the Jets have demanded the spotlight in ways not often seen in professional sports. While other teams have participated in the HBO football reality series Hard Knocks, for example, none did it with the bombast and flair that the Jets did.
Despite their cocksure nature, in the modern day NFL, it is difficult at best to really know how good a team might ultimately be until about halfway through the season. Through the Jets first two games this year, they have sent mixed messages with their on-field performance. In Week One, the Jets were embarrassed in their first game at the New Meadowlands Stadium as the Baltimore Ravens completely stopped their offense (holding the Jets to six first downs for the game), and beating them 10 to 9.
Week Two against the New England Patriots, however, was an entirely different story. If ever a Week Two game can be considered a ‘must win’, this was it; the Jets simply could not afford to lose their first two games at home to conference opponents. The Patriots came in seemingly riding high as they had dismantled the projected AFC contender Cincinnati Bengals the week prior. After a rough start to the game, the Jets impressed and pushed New England all over the field. Suddenly, a 1 and 1 start to the season seemed pretty respectable.
Only two days later, however, Braylon Edwards, their wide receiver and arguably their best offensive player, was arrested on the West Side of Manhattan for drunk driving. As sports talk shows howled and the pundits weighed in, controversy surround the Jets again (coming only two weeks after several Jets players and at least one coach allegedly harassed sideline reporter Ines Sainz), as the team refused to suspend or neccessarily bench Edwards for a signficant portion of the game, citing players union protection (at best a dubious claim as the union cannot force a team to play any individual player…only to pay him).
They did say Edwards wouldn’t start, but refused to divulge how much he would play and when he would enter the game. Edwards playing time is one of the many points of curiosity around this team and the game tonight…yet another reason many will be looking to see what channel the New York Jets game is on tonight in the New York City area.
For those wondering what channel the game will be on in the New York City area, it will be shown on WNBC Channel 4, with kickoff at 8:20PM Eastern Daylight Time.
