Are the Chicago Bears going to be able to bounce back after losing to the Seattle Seahawks? Will they go into their bye-week 5-2 or 4-3? It makes a big difference. During the last few weeks of the season, the Bears are going to be facing some very tough teams, so if they want to go to postseason, they need to win some games now.
Jeff Joniak shares his “Keys to the Game” each week at the Chicago Bears’ website. I have found his thoughts to be congruent with my own, so using his thinking as a reference and adding my own brilliance, I offer the following mental casserole:
Of course it goes without saying that the Bears must protect the quarterback. As Joniak so succinctly puts it, “Until the Bears prove they can stop the rush or blitz, every defensive coordinator for the rest of the season will be aiming at Cutler.” It is really amazing that the Bears have not been able to build on the success of the second week against the Dallas cowboys; they really made them pay, but it seems that they have regressed in many ways.
On defense, the Bears should be in a better position. Lance Briggs will be back, and Danieal Manning is a fast enough safety that the Bears should be able to contain Donavan McNabb.
Both teams have good Special Teams play, but with another punt return for touchdown, Devin Hester moved the Bears up to third.
I think Joniak makes a great point when he discusses the intangibles. He suggests that the Bears were not “up” against Seattle last week, and he is right. You could tell that the team just didn’t seem ready to play. I have a suggestion for that.
The Carolina Panthers were easy prey for the Bears the week before. They barely (excuse the pun) had to break a sweat. I think perhaps they simply coasted into the game against Seattle, but the Seahawks were rested, having come off of a bye-week. If the Bears want to win, they are going to have to work hard against the Redskins.
The NFL betting line has the Bears marked as three-point favorites. Let us hope that is accurate.
