Michigan will be electing a new Governor this November. The incumbent Jennifer Granholm will not be able to run due to term limits; her term limits have expired. The candidates running are Republican Rick Snyder and Democrat Virg Bernero.
The Bernero camp has made many different claims as to why Snyder is not fit to be governor. Snyder has been accused of cutting jobs and shipping them overseas which is a big issue in Michigan because of the high unemployment rate.
There are also claims that Snyder will not debate Bernero; only one debate has been set when there are usually at least a few if not several. Snyder claims he has reasons but I don’t think the public believes there is any good reason for a candidate not to stand up and debate issues that are important to their constituents.
Rick Snyder has been backed by organizations such as police departments, Realtors ®, and the Michigan Farmer Bureau which are reported on his website. Virg Bernero on the other hand has been endorsed by the UAW and other worker’s organizations; he has also received endorsements from a few different women’s advocate groups. Even the Michigan Education Association has backed Bernero.
Virg Bernero is currently the mayor of Lansing, MI a position which allowed him to bring jobs to his city and has helped to improve Lansing in many ways. However, Snyder has never held an elected position; he is a wealthy business man who will most likely take on the job of Governor like a CEO. Many supporters of Bernero have chosen to support him because they believe he will bring in jobs and protect personal freedom. Jobs are one of the core issues that the candidates face in this election; which indicates that Virg Bernero is a step ahead of Rick Snyder.
Rick Snyder seems to have all the right Republican propaganda on his website but his website does not convey any real information. He outlines a plan but it looks more like a wish list with no solid foundation. Virg Bernero’s website gives real information such as event dates and locations of events; he also lists new clips on his website which are helpful in understanding his view points.
Because jobs are the main issue most voters will vote for the candidate they feel will bring the most jobs to Michigan. Many people cast their vote because of an issue that touches their personal life. Issues like abortion, gun rights, medical marijuana, poverty, abandon and foreclosed houses, crime, energy, and above all jobs are the issues that most people feel are important.
Determining a candidate’s stance on an issue is not always hard unless they do not want to share their opinion on an issue because they fear losing votes. Virg Bernero’s website lists issues such as jobs, education, energy, environment, health care, equality, and public safety. However, he does not list his opinion on open carry laws, poverty and foreclosures, or medical marijuana. Bernero’s website page titled Issues is all common sense but he does not address any of the controversial issues.
Rick Snyder’s website does not list any specific issues but it does have a lot of information about his previous experience and professional history. The only issues addressed on his website are listed under FAQ; there he states that he supports the 2nd amendment, is pro-life even though he voted against stem cell research because it was his belief that there are better alternatives. One important issue that has won Rick Snyder supporters is his refusal to take money from special interest groups.
I have contacted the candidates via email to see if they will answer the hard questions; look forward to my next article, hopefully the candidates will answer the hard questions. If you have a question send it to me at email@example.com
