My keyboard had a connection fault this morning and it made me realise just how much I used my keyboard while on or off line. I did my usual and signed into Facebook to update my Farmville game, laughing, yes I know my age, but age has nothing to do with this.
I thought to myself what the heck as I tried to enter a message into my chat to a friend, obviously this is the point I realized my keyboard was not working, nothing I typed was coming up on screen.
In order to ensure that it was the keyboard I opened up my word program, and low and behold nothing I typed was showing up there either, so I knew it was definitely a keyboard problem.
I checked the connections and nothing happened, still no keyboard, then I restarted my computer and as it was loading it came up with no keyboard connection, so I popped the lead into another connection on my computer and thank goodness away it went now back in action as I opened up word and typed away.
The relief I felt to have my keyboard back in action was unbelievable, being an author my keyboard is an invaluable peace of equipment, I would have had to write by hand and then typed it into my computer at a latter date when the keyboard had been sorted out if I had not got it up and running, this would have been a total pain in the rear end to say the least. My only other option would have been to audio record everything and then type it all out from that when things got back to normal.
It was a nightmare thought that I couldn’t do my normal editing of the book, article report or anything else I am working on right now, positively horrendous, but it made me realise just how much any author using the technology of today’s world relied upon it.
I remember writing my first published work by hand and then my first full length fiction novel by hand, typing them out painstakingly on my old typewriter, and I personally wouldn’t want to go back to that system. I do not expect many other authors would either given the choice.
I wondered what piece of equipment I would most hate to loose the use of, but my brain just could not make a definitive choice as I just use so many things on a daily basis.
If you had to choose a piece of equipment you use on a daily basis what would it be and why?
