Have you ever wondered about what you were doing with your life? What does it all mean…how does it matter…what will be left when your life is over? Are you leaving a legacy? If so, what kind of legacy are you leaving?
I went to a conference for work last week that was entitled Haiti: 10 months after the quake. Haiti sustained a devastating earthquake in January of this year…225,000 were killed and over 1.3 million were displaced. There are literally very few structures left standing in the affected areas and the entire government has pretty much dissolved. We have all seen the TV commercials and those asking for donation to assist the Haitian people, but how much does it really affect you?
I think most of us probably watch and go…”Wow, that is terrible. What a shame” and out of guilt we sometimes send some financial resources their way. This is helpful to a certain extent, but what happens after that? In talking with one of the women (Leigh Carter) who was speaking last week, she was there during the quake…jumped out a window…and broke her back. She went back in June and saw the pile of rubble they pulled her from after she broke her back. She is still a strong advocate for the Haitian people and a fundraiser for Fonkoze Bank, a bank for the poor people of Haiti.
Leigh was telling me about how the Haitian women are mainly the ones left and trying to rebuild their lives. The men come along and the women cling to them, have a baby in the hopes the man will stay and take care of the family, but in most cases they don’t. So then they look for another man and the situation continues. Fonkoze is trying to teach them skills and provide them small loans to start businesses so they can learn to provide for their families and not seek another man to take care of them. This is all and good and meeting their materials needs, but there is a great need to meet their spiritual needs. They need the Gospel and love of Christ in their lives.
There are a lot of Christian organizations working in Haiti, but little is being accomplished with regards to re-building of structures and lives.
Haiti also was just hit with a Hurricane that blew through an already ravaged land and caused more devastation and destruction. They need our prayers and the Gospel.
Not everyone feels called to Haiti, but some of us have been. Are you one? If you are…then you know what you need to do…Get in the center of His will. If you are not…pray fervently for their Haitians and the spreading of the Gospel throughout that region.
Haiti may not be calling…but what is? Who has God put you in contact with that you just naturally relate to? The poor? The homeless? Businessmen and women? Construction workers? Commuters? That is where God wants you to start!!
Don’t get to the end of your life and as one older gentlemen who was very calloused throughout most of his life and finally submitted to Christ when he was in his 80’s realized what some of us will…through his tears he cried “I wasted it…I wasted it!” He was referring to his life and what he could have done had he followed Christ and used his life for His purpose.
Say to God “Here I am Lord…send me.” He wants to use you and has a great plan for your life!
May God richly bless you my beloved!
