I just heard that Charlotte Church is putting out a new album (her first in 5 years) on October 25, 2010, and I thought, “Wow, I haven’t heard anything about her for a while.” In fact, the last time I remember seeing her was when she sang a duet of “The Prayer” with Josh Groban at the closing ceremonies of the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002. So I was wondering the same thing you’re wondering – what happened to Charlotte Church?
Charlotte Church became a household name in 1998, when her first album, entitled Voice of an Angel, which contained traditional, religious songs, and which sold millions of copies internationally. In the next few years she was everywhere, appearing on televised concerts, singing with other well-known singers of the time (e.g., Billy Gilman), and even appearing in the 2001 movie, A Beautiful Mind. There were subsequent albums and tours. Then, in 2005, she decided to venture into pop music. Her new album did poorly enough in the UK that it was decided that it would not be released in the U.S. (although it is now available on iTunes). Her new album will, apparently, be pop-themed once again. [source: Charlotte Church – Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlotte_Church].
If there is a male equivalent of Charlotte Church, it must be Josh Groban. He didn’t become famous at as young an age as she did, but he started out singing the same classical, pop-opera style songs. In fact, he has sung with Charlotte Church on several occasions. So why is it that Josh Groban continues to sell albums, while Charlotte Church seems to be struggling?
Here’s a helpful comment from Groban: “I am fortunate enough to have had many really big moments in my career. I think the mistake a lot of people in my position make is to always search for the next big thing.” [Source: Josh Groban – Wikipedia, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Groban.] I think that is an astute point.
In fact, I believe Groban has identified the very mistake Charlotte Church has made. In business terms, you would say that she has moved away from her core competency. When she sang classical songs she was hugely successful. She tried branching out into pop and it didn’t work very well. So, the next logical step would be to move back to classical songs. Unfortunately, that is not what she is doing. Consequently, I will be pretty surprised if the next album is a hit.
