Remember Jim Nabors, the actor who played Gomer Pyle? After playing the famous gas station attendant on the Andy Griffith Show, he also had his own spin-off (Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.). But then what happened to him?
The Andy Griffith Show, which ran from 1960 to 1968, was massively popular and started successful careers for several actors, including Jim Nabors. During its run, the show was always one of the top-seven shows in the Nielsen ratings, placing number one in its final season. [Source: Andy_Griffith_Show – Wikipedia. After becoming famous as Gomer Pyle, Nabors sang on a 1964 episode of The Danny Kaye Show, and impressed the viewing audience. This led him to release a number of successful albums. Then, from 1969 to 1971, he hosted The Jim Nabors Hour, one of many variety shows at the time. In the 1970’s, he appeared in various TV shows, including The Carol Burnett Show, and starred in a children’s show called “The Lost Saucer.” Then in the 1980’s he starred in three Burt Reynolds movies, including The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. He also appeared in the made-for-TV film “Return to Mayberry.” He then moved on to stage acting. Since then he has continued to make personal appearances. He has lived in Hawaii since 1976. Jim Nabors is well-like partly because of his humble demeanor. Although he has had a very successful career, he has always been content to be part of the supporting cast. While he is a talented comedic actor, I believe his enduring appeal is a result of his likeable personality and every-man charm.
