After the death of our Grandfather and family cornerstone this summer, each of us took some time to dig through Grandpa Norm’s past to reflect on what an amazing life he lead. In 84 years he had time to work on a dairy farm, fight in a world war, become a celebrated boxer, work in the railroad and paper industries, and in his later years win dozens of trophies and awards racing in International Old Timer Motocross Association events.
Motocross kept Grandpa Norm and his competitors young and active after retirement, and the International Oldtimer Motocross Association (OTMX) strives to maintain competition for participants far beyond what many might believe to be the “peak years” for motocross racing. Only eligible to participants over the age of 40, OTMX welcomes any senior motocross racers who have the inclination and ability to ride the track.
Grandpa Norm was a typical OTMX racer, competing on the track well into his 80’s and doing his best to get anyone old enough (or young enough) to give motorcycle riding a try. OTMX does a great job of posting upcoming events and past race results to keep friends, fans and family abreast of the racing season; giving motocross racers plenty to brag about between events and in the off season.
The one thing that will always stand out in my memory of Grandpa Norm is the wall of plaques and shelves of trophies that he won during International Oldtimer Motocross Association races over the years. It was an organization that he loved, and this writer hopes it is one that will continue to be available for active seniors who still feel like they have the stuff to make it in motocross racing.
