While hot tubs are fun, they are also time-consuming, expensive to maintain, and hard to keep clean if you don’t know what you’re doing. More often than not, my sister’s hot tub (which she is trying to give to me) would be full of green mossy stuff because they didn’t balance the chemicals right or whatever, and they would constantly be draining it and re-heating it up to keep it clean and usable. Here are the things I am considering before taking their hot tub on, and they are great thoughts to consider for anyone.
Where the hell are you going to put a hot tub? Unless you have a deck or gazebo or something, you may be stuck building one. We would have to put it outside the back door and have to put down at least decorative rocks. I would also want a gazebo or something built around it so my neighbors couldn’t see me crawling in and out of the sucker- I mean, our trailer is right by the common mailboxes, so a lot of traffic goes by our home. Do I really want my neighbors (and do you?) to see me flopping around in a swim suit? You have to consider if you have the means already to put a hot tub in.
Do you know how to care for a hot tub? You have to keep the pH of the water maintained to avoid it getting green and gross, and regular maintenance from a hot tub specialist (whatever you call them) can be expensive. I’ve gone with my sister to buy supplies for her hot tub, and that stuff is NOT cheap. You have to consider the fact that you will be spending a lot of time keeping the bugger clean.
Really, how often would you use your hot tub if you had one? The reason my sister and her husband are getting rid of theirs is because they don’t ever use it. It just sits there, and they don’t want it to be their problem anymore. And realistically, the kids would love it, as would my fiance, but since we only have the kids every now and then and my fiance is too busy to lounge in one, and I HATE water, the hot tub if we had it would be used what- once a month? Even a free hot tub is not always a great deal if you’re not going to use it.
Who is going to clean the hot tub? Who is going to drain the hot tub? Who is going to make sure the hot tub has the proper chemicals in it? My sister and her husband were always all, “I thought YOU did it”, which is why their hot tub always looked like a swamp mess.
Can you afford a hot tub? What else do you need that your hot tub money could be spent on? If you can technically afford a hot tub, but still have a car payment, medical bills stacked up, or other, more important things you could pay on instead, you may want to reconsider adding a hot tub to your spending. There are almost always things you need more than a hot tub, even if you can afford one.
Do you really, really NEED a hot tub? For relaxation and medical soothing, I can understand. But just to have one? Unless you’ll be singing praises every single day boiling in your awesome hot tub, you likely don’t really need one. They are expensive to maintain, need housing and a good spot to set, and need regular cleaning and service. If you don’t really need one, soak in your tub instead and save yourself some dough.
