Ask the Police. “I came home and the front door to my house was wide open, what should I do?
At first it is confusing and then quite terrifying to drive home, pull up in your driveway and notice that the front door to your house is wide open.
This happened to me several years ago when I came home, the front door to my house wide open. What did I do? Well, I went inside, and my 9mm semi-automatic handgun was leading the way!
I found nothing inside out of place and realized that I must have not closed the door tight enough and the wind blew it open. Afterwards, I got thinking, that most people do not have the training or the luxury of being able to carry a gun for protection like I do, but what I should have done, for my own safety and the safety of everyone else was called the Police and at least had some back-up when I went inside.
The truth is, you just never know what to expect and anything can happen. If you come home and find your front door wide open or you can see a broken window, here is what I recommend you do.
Since you truly do not know what has happened and there is a possibility that a thief could still be inside your house, the proper things to do is call 9-1-1 right away and get the Police there to make sure it is safe.
Calling a neighbor for help and support is also a good idea just in case after the Police are gone you need someone there with you to help deal with the stress of it all. You may find that all is OK and there is a logical explanation for the door being open like the wind. However, you may find that a thief has taken everything, stolen all your treasures and if so, it is not good to be alone.
It can be a bit stressful but the most important thing is your safety so it is important that you avoid the temptation to rush inside to try to find out if anyone is in your house.
