I hate having to take antibiotics. Why? Because they always make me feel worse than before I began taking them to cure my illness, and I’m always tempted to just forgo the antibiotics and just deal with my illness. But in order to get better, you have to take your antibiotics as directed and finish the regimen, and you will be greatly rewarded by getting better.
I’ve been on antibiotics, gosh, 4 times in the last year, currently for a bronchial infection. I’ve been on antibiotics for blood infections, simple female things, and for my last year’s bout with the cold (once again, it turned into a bronchial infection). Here is what to expect when you are on antibiotics for any reason.
Expect to feel like you’re going to puke, whether you take antibiotics with food or not. I always get extremely nauseous. Sometimes I throw up. It’s just how your body may react to the antibiotics in your system. You can also get severe headaches, diarrhea, stomach cramping, or dizziness. I get all the side effects from my antibiotics every time.
Expect to drink a lot of water. Antibiotics give you cotton mouth like you wouldn’t believe. Expect to puke up a lot of water. It’s just par for the course, feeling like crap when you’re actually getting better.
Ladies, you may or may not get a yeast infection or vaginal discharge or itching while on antibiotics. The longer you’re on antibiotics, the more likely you are to have vaginal issues. Antibiotics mess with our pH, and a yeast infection is just bound to occur. It’s happened to me more than once. It sucks, but it’s just part of it.
Also, ladies, if you’re on birth control, your antibiotics may make your birth control weaker. I know a girl who got pregnant while on Amoxicillin for an ear infection, and she was on the Depo. Oops. Use backup birth control just in case while you’re on antibiotics to avoid getting pregnant.
You will want to sleep. A lot. And You’ll want to quit taking your antibiotics because you’re feeling better but for the antibiotics side effects. You have to finish the full prescription though, to fully knock out your illness.
Don’t take 2 pills at once. If you miss one, and it’s almost time for the next one, do not take 2! I did this and thought I was going to die or pass out. I threw up all over the place, and I was at work. The directions say to take one as soon as you remember, or if it’s close to the next dose, just take the next dose, and you will be on the antibiotic for a bit longer since you missed one. If you take 2, you will be sorry.
You will either have a massive appetite, or no appetite at all, but you need to eat something. I have no appetite whatsoever, but eating with your antibiotics (unless it says not to eat) makes them hopefully stay down better.
Drink your antibiotic with a full glass of water. You will be guzzling water anyhow, trust me.
If you are taking other prescriptions along with your antibiotic, try not to take them at the same time. I’m on that cough syrup with codeine in it, and an inhaler so I can breathe, so I’m not going to use the inhaler, take a dose of cough syrup, and take the antibiotic at the same time. I already did that, and I threw up ALL over myself and my fiance. It was not pretty, and it prevents you from absorbing the whole antibiotic.
Lastly, just remember, while you’re in bed praying for death, that you actually ARE getting better. You may have the runs, be puking your guts out, be all loopy, dizzy, and your head hurts like crazy (not to mention your itchy crotch), but you actually ARE getting better, believe it or not.
