Every two minutes someone in the US is being sexually assaulted. Approximately 60% of these sexual assaults will not be reported. At least three out of four rape victims will know their assailant. Sobering, isn’t it?
Despite hundreds of thousands of articles like this one out there in print and online, these acts of violence continue to happen. Armed with the following information, it is my hope that many future rapes can be procured. The most important thing to remember is that rape is not about sex. Sex is the weapon, i.e. the penis is the weapon. Most rapists are unarmed and many are under the age of 25. They come from underserved backgrounds of minority (not necessarily race, but economically and educationally speaking). One in three has a criminal history of violent behavior. One in four assailants have raped before. Encouraging news in that 80% of rapists are not strangers and are known to the victim. Despite the gravity of the situation, this means that the victim has some power-though no rape is the fault of the victim.
If a rapist is a stranger, the person will fit into two categories, theoretically:
Disorganized Asocial Offender
*Lack of personal hygiene, cleanliness with car/house
*Sex after death
*Chaotic crime scene
*Won’t move body
*Weapon is left at scene
*Physical evidence present
*Often returns to crime scene or attends funeral
*Non-assertive, low IQ, high school dropout
*Introvert, lacks social skills
Organized Nonsocial Offender
*Loners by choice, high IQ, educated, socially competent
*Might be married, middle class background
*Excellent personal hygiene, good job
*Likely has a substance abuse problem
*Won’t be suspected as a rapist, very likeable or approachable
*Targets victim, controls conversation and crime scene
*Personalizes victim, plans well in advance
*Will move the body
*Won’t leave a weapon at the crime scene
Remember to be aware of your surroundings and don’t pull over in a secluded area if flagged down. Even if a cop is pulling you over, seek a well lit and public place. A real cop will understand your intrepidation once it’s dark. If you live alone, have a male friend record your message on your answering machine-with a dog barking in the background preferably. Get a dog, a really big dog. Never get within arm’s length of a stranger. Take the three-quarter stance (like a cop), where one leg is slightly behind you and your other leg is slightly apart and to the front of you. This way you won’t be as easy to push down and will be able to get away form the perpetrator more easily. Always stay alert!
Types of rapists will follow suit in an upcoming article by Asher Kade.
