Newly elected Republican Senatorial candidate, Christine O’Donnell (read about her here), the latest surprise caught in the glaring public spotlight, has said a few egregious things, like promoting abstinence (wasn’t that tried once before?), teaching the Bible’s Genesis in high school as literal, word-for-word truth, and also (my favorite), about “legislating morality”.
O’Donnell said in a C-Span appearance that it was a “misconception that you, quote unquote, can’t legislate morality.” (source)
What? Morality? Whose morality? Her morality? America’s collective idea of morality? What could that be? But for people like Christine O’Donnell, it means, Ya know, Morality.
Oh, yes. We got it. We get it. We understand. Morality. That stuff in the Bible, I suppose.
To define morality, I could write a book. But, if O’Donnell didn’t know, there are countless books defining ‘morality’. Morality is one of those words that you might want to picture as a huge box. And it is full. Full of what? Well….
Who knows? Morality is an unpackaged word that doesn’t simply ask to be defined, it demands to be unpacked. Except, the package keeps being filled, and it seems to be endless. And so, Ms. O’Donnell, you’re going to need to start unpacking that box.
But Americans don’t like that. Especially politicians. It takes intelligence and intellect to unpack a box called Morality. It takes time, care, patience, understanding, and in the end, the box is still full, because it is filled anew everyday with new ideas, new meanings, and alternate considerations.
Every day is a new horizon. Each day needs new consideration.
The word ‘morality’ is in flux. It is always changing. Again and again. Never static. You think Moses is a good example of morality? Read the Bible and think again. Moses led an army which almost killed as many people as George Bush Jr. did. But that’s just a simple example.
Moses was an ass. And George Bush Jr. is…an ass. To better define ‘ass’, let’s insert the word ‘murderous’ before it. Moses was, and George Bush Jr. is, a murderous ass. There, that’s settled.
Morality. When you hear a keyword like this being spoken by a politician (nearly all of them do it), you should ignore them, or spit at them. And I hope you hit them with your spit, because it needs to be done. America is past the age of Innocence. We can no longer defend ourselves with words, but with flying spittle.
And tomatoes. Run this woman off the stage. O’Donnell to legislate morality. And spit. O’Donnell to tell you how the world was created. Spit again. And hopefully, she among the rest, get the point. O’Donnell slams welfare and food stamps. Spit.
You get the point.
