I woke up around twelve o’ clock to the sun shining into my bedroom windows. I stood up rubbed my eyes and took a long stretch. I opened the door to my room and made my way towards the stairs to the first floor. As I made my way downstairs I heard the back door open and figured my parents were home. I made my way into the kitchen but to my surprise there was no sign of anyone. I grabbed a bowl and poured some cereal and milk into it. I made my way back upstairs to my room where I placed the bowl on my desk. I got onto my computer and signed in to check if any of my Friends were awake and online but unfortunately no one was. I sat around the house for most of the day waiting for the delivery guy to drop off my package. I recently got into ghosts and the supernatural and out of curiosity I ordered a bunch of ghost hunting equipment. Finally he arrived and I took the box up to my room to get everything set up. I put everything down next to my desk and i started ripping open the box. Inside I found a letter that basically said that the equipment was non refundable and that attempting to contact ghosts was both difficult and dangerous. I tossed the letter aside and began putting together the different electronics I had ordered. My old TV from the attic was set up with a VCR to record the static because I heard sometimes you could pick up faces and things unintentionally. I also ordered an EMF reader, Inferred non contact thermometer and a table top microphone so I could record any noises there might be. It was basically a ghost hunting starter kit. After I played around with the equipment I hid it all in my closet, my mom wasn’t really a big fan of ghost related things. Tomorrow was Halloween and that was when I planned on using all this gear because supposedly that was when spirits were most powerful.
As I headed back downstairs to throw my empty bowl in the dishwasher and passed my parents room and saw that they weren’t in. I continued to the kitchen and placed the bowl in the dishwasher when I heard the strangest sound. I walked out into the living room and looked around hoping to find the source of the noise.
“Mom?” I said into the silence.
Then the noise again, this time coming from the basement.
“Dad?” I called now heading towards the basement.
I slowly opened the basement door and peered down the dark steps. i hate everything about this basement, from the musty smell it has, to the dim lit light bulbs that kept it lit. In the corner of the basement there seems to be some sort of orange light near the floor. As I leaned in to try to get a better look it began to move towards me. Without thinking I slammed the door and ran towards my room. I flew up the stairs and slammed my bedroom door behind me. I then sat and stared at the door almost expecting someone or something to walk through it. My adrenaline was pumping so hard I thought my veins were about to explode. I had to do something so I turned on my TV to break the silence of my empty house.
As I sat there I thought about an experience I had when I was younger that my parents wrote off as an over active imagination. I was about seven or eight years old and I was lying in bed staring at the ceiling. My only source of light was a night light on the wall of my favorite superhero. I remember the light creeping me out a little because of the creepy silhouettes that everything around it were casting. Trying to fall asleep I shifted from one side to the other and then back onto my back again. As i fidgeted a bit and fixed the blanket I felt like someone was watching me. Before I could even think the mattress began to lift up near my legs and was being pushed towards my feet. Right before it reached my legs it plopped back down and I took off running. I woke my parents and told them what happened but they wouldn’t believe me. They sent me back to my room where I stayed until I finally passed out. From that night on I had a reoccurring “nightmare” where I would wake up and pass the wooden basement door and hear someone calling my name. I would put my ear to the door and they would be calling me into the basement and saying something I couldn’t understand and laughing. After this one they sent me to a shrink for a while and eventually they stopped and so did the sessions.
Finally I saw the car pull into the driveway and my mother made her way out of the car and into the house. I headed downstairs to greet her and decided that I would keep the incident to myself.
“Hey mom” I said’
“Hey honey, your finally awake.” She said
“Yea I’ve been up hanging around the house and watching TV and playing video games.”
” Don’t forget that me and dad have a Halloween party to go to tomorrow. Are you sure your going to be OK?” She said
“I’ll be fine. I’ll figure out something to keep myself busy.” I said.
“OK, well I will call you when dinners ready.”She smiled.
“Alright.” I said as I turned to head back to my room.
I was feeling a lot better now that there were people in the house with me. After dinner I showered and and stayed in my room until I passed out. I’m not sure when I passed out but it was fairly early considering when I usually do.
Finally Halloween was here and in a few minutes my parents were going to leave for their party and the fun could begin. I had a few Friends who were going to come over but they bailed on me last minute. While I was looking over some of the manuals for the equipment there was a knock on my room door.
“Come in.” I yelled.
I placed the manual under the pillow and looked up. The door opened and my mom stood in the doorway in her costume.
“Your costume looks great mom.” I said
“Thanks Hun. Were gonna get going now. Your sure your going to be OK alone?” She seemed worried.
“I’ll be fine I promise. Go out and have a good time.”
“OK. There’s money on the counter for you to order something. I’ll talk to you later.”
She kisses my forehead and walks out of the room. A few moments later I could hear the car leaving the driveway and continued down the street. I hooked up the TV and began recording the static. I then went into the closet and got out all of the new equipment. I figured for the recordings I would try to walk around the house until I found the area with the most activity. As I wondered through the house i wondered what I will do if I actually find activity in the house. I wasn’t sure if i would be scared or excited. I made my way through my parents room, the living room and the bathroom and started towards the kitchen. As I made my way past the basement the needle on the EMF spiked. Of course of all places in the house the basement has to be the one to trigger the equipment, how cliche. I opened the door and placed the microphone on the floor above the top step and switched on the recorder. I peered down into the darkness and began asking questions.
“Are you down in the basement?”
Nothing. So I shut the door and continued on through the house. There wasn’t any other activity that night except some trick or treaters that stopped by. I decided to give up on my ghost hunting and went up to my room to watch TV.
I wasn’t much later that I decided to head down to get a snack from the kitchen and maybe use the bathroom. I opened my bedroom door only to realize that I had only left certain lights on in the house. I ventured down the dark steps and made my way through the barely lit rooms into the bathroom. I finished up my business , washed my hands and looked up into the mirror. I don’t know why but I just stared at myself for a second almost in a daze. I felt some odd prescience in the room but I couldn’t figure out what it was. I turned to the door but something caught my eye and forced me to look back into the mirror. This time i was taken back and slammed myself into the wall accidentally. Looking at me through the mirror was a man about six foot tall wearing a black and white suit. He had light tan skin and medium black hair that was slicked back. Slowly he lifted his head revealing his devilish smirk and bright orange eyes. In what could only be described as a blinks time I saw him come at me and the next thing I knew I was pulling a bloody hand back from the mirror. I quickly cleaned up the mess and my hand and came up with a quick and believable excuse as to why the mirror was busted.
After that I got rid of the gear and vowed never to try anything like that again. I didn’t bother watching the tape and I deleted the audio files. For the next few nights I heard someone calling my name at night. Sometimes I would catch glimpses of the man in the darkness around the house. It was torture for me especially since I had no one to talk to about it. My Friends wouldn’t listen and my parents didn’t believe me. So finally after a few nights I figured I would do something about it. I heard him calling me again from somewhere in the house and decided to follow his voice. I followed it through the house to the basement door. Ignoring my greater judgment I descended down the basement stairs into the darkness. In the far corner I could see the slight eerie glow of the boiler. I turn and flick the light switch but nothing happened. I spun back around and on the other side of the room two small lights began slowly coming into focus. Before long the man from the mirror’s whole body was visible and he was staring me right in the face.
” What do you want from me?” I said trying to sound brave.
He continued to stare at me with no reply. Suddenly his face began to melt away like water until only bone was left. I didn’t understand any of it and just stood there in the silence.
“I want your soul. I’ll take it whether you like it or not. There’s nothing you can do to stop me.” He finally blurted
“My Soul? Why my soul?” I asked.
“I need your soul to keep my self young. “
With that I spun and raced toward the door. After taking one step I felt something grab onto my shoulder and twist me around. In an attempt to break free I took a swing at him. He dodged the punch and the last thing I remember is my face hitting the cold stone wall.
The next morning I awoke to my mother screaming. I was on the bedroom floor and I could feel something wet all around me. As I blinked a few times I started to regain my sight and could now see my mother standing over me with a shocked look on her face. It took a moment but finally the pain hit me like a ton of bricks.
“WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO YOU?” My mom screamed.
“I fell down the stairs.” I said.
“Stop lying and tell me what happened to you.” She demanded.
So I explained everything to her, the voices, the mirror, the basement, all of it. I wasn’t going to be able to explain the blood on my floor or the cuts on my body any other way. After I finished telling her everything I was sent to a shrink, which is the last thing I wanted. I told him as little as I could for now and headed back home. Slowly memories of that night started to come back to me.
” When darkness falls know I’m near…” that was the last thing that I remember him saying that night. The only other thing that I could figure out was that he needed darkness to reveal himself, which would explain why he appeared in the basement. At this point I would do anything to stay in the light but I know I won’t be able to forever.
Home alone again and trying to stay as far away from the basement as I can. I heard down stairs for a drink and there it is again. Calling me from the darkness below I could hear him chanting my name. I stood there pleading for him to go away while I wacthed the faint amber glow under the basement door start to grow. I rushed past the door and began running towards the steps. When suddenly right as I made it to the stairs everything went dark.
“No!” I screamed.
I ran to the window and looked outside only to see that the whole block was dark. suddenly the chanting stopped and the door slowly creaked open. The amber lights slowly took over the kitchen and laughter began to fill the house. I turn and race towards the stairs hearing everything I run into fall to the ground. My feet frantically stomp as I make my way up the stairs towards my room. I slam the door behind me and fall back onto my bed. I climb over to the other side and take refugee behind my night stand. I could hear the thumping of his footsteps as he made his way up to my room. The door was thrown open and I was again staring at the man in my doorway, orange eyes fixated on my hiding spot. I closed my eyes and prayed that the lights would come back on and he would vanish. I opened them back up and noticed him moving slowly towards me. I closed them again but tighter this time. I could feel him reaching for me in the dark.
I blacked out again and could faintly hear my mother calling my name. She sounded frantic so I assume she saw all the things on the floor. She tells me that when she found me I was sitting in the corner of my room. I had my knees placed against my chest and I was rocking back and forth. I wouldn’t talk to her at all and I was chanting ” In the darkness he shall come, no where to hide, no use to run.”
“That’s why I’m here doctor.” I said.
The doctor sitting across from me nodded his head and scribbled something down in his note pad. After he finished writing he motioned to the guards and they led me back to my room. That doctor didn’t believe me and technically I’m clinically insane. One thing that I did get was a fresh light bulb whenever my cell’s went out. I felt safe here even though I’m always alone. I wouldn’t be able to lead a normal life anyway.
It was around three in the morning when I woke up to the noise. Someone was banging against what sounded like a door. I didn’t realize it at first but the room wasn’t being lit by the bulb but rather the moon light from outside. I panicked and ran to the door to try to get help. I yelled and yelled but no one seemed to be outside in the halls. I pushed up against the door and it creaked open. I took a look down both hallways and they were completely empty. Nothing but darkness surrounding the inside and outside of the building. Throughout the halls I could hear the faint laughter of the man. He found me and I knew that I was no longer safe being here. I ran for the stairs and made my way up to the top floor where the employees lived and ate. I raced through the top floor doors and at the end of the hall was the man standing there with a cane. He was taunting me and beckoning me with his finger. I decided that this was it and I was going to have to fight back. I ran towards him and jumped at him hitting him right in the chest. This caused him to be pushed backwards and lose his balance. It wasn’t until i felt the cool air on my face that I realized that I was falling amongst the glass shards towards the ground. And as I fell through the moonlit night I thought about the last thing I’d ever hear. In the darkness he will come, no where to hide, no use to run, there’s no one to help you at all, when darkness falls.
