Remember when school nurses would shove the old glass thermometers in your mouth every time you complained of a stomachache? Who knew those were glass bombs full of mercury. If you have any of those old thermometers in your house-or your grandma does-there are drop off disposal sites all around Palo Alto this month.
First, make sure the thermometer you have is actually a mercury one. A mercury thermometer will have a silver line in the middle-not a red line. Next, package the thermometer in its original case or double-bag it in plastic bags. This is so you don’t accidently break it in transport.
You can drop it off at the Walgreens stores on El Camino Real, Middlefield Road, and University Avenue. You can also drop them off at the Oshman Family Community Center, the Maximart Pharmacy on Cambridge Avenue, or the pharmacy at Palo Alto Medical foundation. There are other drop off sites in Stanford, East Palo Alto, Mountain View, and Los Altos.
Collection ends on October 31. Call the City of Palo Alto at 650-329-2100 for more information on the program.
