Gunsmithing programs are available at several collages and universities throughout the U.S. However, these programs are not convenient for many studnets. Students who require more flexibility or who need to stay closer to home may consider studying an online program in gunsmithing. Several accredited institutions provide online training in ingrepair, building and restorating firearms.
Penn Foster Career School
The Penn Foster Career School, headquartered in Scranton, Pennsylvania, offers an online program in gunsmithing. The program trains students for careers working in gun shops or starting gun repair businesses. Students in the program work at their own past through a series of five instructional sets. These sets cover the firearm industry, parts of firearms, materials used in firearms, metalwork, machine tooling and an overview of various types of firearms. At the end of each set, students complete an exam over the Internet. Penn Foster is accredited by the Commission on Secondary Schools of the Middle States Association.
The gunsmith school at Ashworth College, headquartered in Norcross, Georgia, offers training in troubleshooting, assembling and repairing various firearms. The training course consists of 19 lessons covering repair, tools, maintenance, shop set-up, safety, refinishing, ammunition and various types of guns. After each lessons, students take an online open-book exam. Students learn the technical aspects of gunsmithing as well as business skills for providing gunsmithing services. The program awards a career diploma. Ashworth is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council.
Sonoran Desert Institute
The Sonoran Desert Institute offers gunsmith training through its School of Gunsmithing. The school is located in Scottsdale, Arizona, but the certificate program is available online. The program can be completed at the student’s own pace. The fee for the course includes a gun cleaning kits and additional tools used in the trade. Students work through eight modules covering the business of gunsmithing, cleaning and storing, trouble shooting, barrel replacement, gunstocks, metalworking, reloading and business start-up skills. Sonoran Desert Institute is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council.
