When renting their first apartment, most young adults don’t have large amounts of money to spend on furnishings. There are, however, places you can go to purchase inexpensive furniture that will look great and last a few years until you’re able to buy lifelong heirloom quality furniture.
Ikea, the Sweden-based furniture company, is known for inexpensive yet high quality furniture. When you buy furniture at Ikea, you’ll have to put it together yourself, but the extra time and effort will save you a few precious dollars.
Ikea’s furniture will also grow with you as you get older and move on to nicer apartments – almost all of their furniture is customizable. With couches, chairs, and tables, you will just buy the base and buy the cover or chair cushions separately. In recent years, Ikea has also begun to allow customers to build their own tables by choosing shapes, legs, and materials, further allowing you to build based on price and personal preference.
Many people don’t think of Target as a place to buy furniture, but there is a great furniture section with inexpensive tables, chairs, and other necessary furniture. While Target doesn’t have has large of a selection as Ikea, you will be able to buy all your other apartment essentials in the same place.
Wal-Mart generally has a selection similar to Target but at lower prices and lower quality. If you’re really tight on money, Wal-Mart might be your best choice, but if you’re able to spend just a little more, Target/Ikea furniture will last longer and be better investments for a few extra years of use.
When buying furniture off of websites like Ebay or Craiglist, you will be purchasing higher quality furniture at a lower price because it has been used. When buying used furniture, always inspect it to ensure that there are no disgusting stains, smells, or other issues with the furniture. If you’re looking for high quality furniture and don’t care that others have used it for years, this may be the best route for you – there are some gems when purchasing furniture this way. Also, be careful when meeting up with people to pick up the furniture because you never know who you’re meeting up with.
