Eye shadow primers are an essential beauty product. There are many types of eye shadow primers and bases. Different types and brands can give you very different results. Which eye shadow primer is right for you? Read on and decide for yourself.
An eye shadow primer can help your eye shadow last longer on your eyelids. Some primers contain ingredients that prevent or absorb oil build up, which can cause your eye shadow to crease or fade through out the day. Most primers claim to prolong your eye shadow’s wear time. However, all eye primers are not created equal.
Urban Decay Primer Potion is an eye shadow primer in a universal shade that any skin tone can wear. This is a great primer and is used and loved by many. Primer Potion’s basic function is to keep your eye shadow looking fresh on your lids for a long time while bringing out the most of your eye shadow’s color. This specific brand works best on people with oily eyelids. Those with normal or dry lids usually complain that this product makes their lids too dry or scaly. If you’ve experienced this problem when using Urban Decay Primer Potion, the formula is not for you.
Another eye shadow primer that comes in a universal shade and is proven to work wonders in extending the wear time of your shadow is Too Faced Shadow Insurance. Too Faced Shadow Insurance is a favorite of people with normal or dry eye lids with less of an oil problem. If you haven’t had luck with the Urban Decay formula, give Too Faced Shadow Insurance a shot.
If you have a larger budget to work with, check out NARS Smudge Proof Eye Base. This stuff works wonders and keep shadow looking fresh all day. The price tag is quite large but it is well worth it.
Another function some eye shadow primers have is the ability to enhance eye shadow colors. Often times we want to wear a bright or funky colored eye shadow only to have it fade to a dull muted color when applied. There are eye shadow primers that can keep your eye shadow color “true to pan” even when transferred to the eyes.
My favorite primer for this is Fyrinnae’s Pixie Epoxy. This is a great primer for bright colors and it also helps glitter adhere to the eyes. If you have an eye shadow with a lot of glitter fall out, Pixie Epoxy can help keep that glitter on your eyes and off of your cheeks. It also dramatically enhances color and makes the shadow stand out beautifully.
Another popular product used to enhance the color and extend the wear of eye shadow are M.A.C’s paint pots. Many people love this product as an eye shadow base/primer. Choose a natural color as close to your own skin tone as possible and you have the perfect eye base to apply your color to.
Evening out the Skin Tone
A lot of us have uneven skin tone. That’s why we use foundations and concealers on our faces. Uneven skin tone doesn’t stop at just the face though. Many of us have uneven skin tone or sun damage on our eye lids which can often interfere with the colors we apply to our eyes. In order to fix this problem we have to apply a base that evens out the color in our lids.
Some great eye primers that can mask the unwanted color include M.A.C Paint Pots, M.A.C Shadesticks, and Bobbi Brown Eye Concealer.
Regardless of what you need your primer for, it’s important to have one if you wear eye shadow. Personally, I have them all handy because I will eventually need them for something. If you’re not makeup crazed like me though, you should be able to get by with just one, if it’s the right one for you.
