MTV has found it’s next phenomenon with the Sixteen and Pregnant and Teen Mom series. It is impossible not to become addicted to the ups and downs of each of these girls who struggle to cope with pregnancy and everything that comes with it. Only three of the girls on Teen Mom can be appraised on their mothering skills, as Caitlyn found a better life for her daughter Carly through adoption.
MTV does an excellent job of insuring that keeping your baby and choosing the adoption route are both difficult choices. When you meet Caitlyn’s mother and step dad, you completely understand why she wouldn’t want to bring a child into her already stressful household. That brings us to the other girls, Amber, Farrah, and Macey. All three of them struggle to make things work in less than desirable circumstances.
The best and worst thing about the show is watching the girls go through the learning experience of motherhood. It is very educational for the audience to see the girls make mistakes and struggle. Let’s take a look at each young woman and see where they excel and where they could use some improvement.
AMBER: Amber is outspoken and sensitive, loving and insecure, stressed out and hardworking. She is the most passionate personality on the show, and also comes with the worst temper and a quick tongue. She desperately wants things to work with the father of her child, Gary. However, they usually can’t get along for five minutes without Amber flying off the handle and telling Gary to get out.
Their daughters name is Leah. It is clear that they both love her and want to do what’s best with her, but their immature relationship gets in the way. It is clear that they both could use personal counseling before they move onto couple’s counseling. Amber constantly talks down to Gary and most of the time he just takes it to avoid a fight, but if Gary says anything remotely hurtful, the over sensitive Amber is a train wreck.
Leah is the baby in the crossfire. She may be too young to understand exactly what is going on, but she is old enough to sense the constant tension and be effected by the screaming. You can tell that Amber thinks the key to Leah’s happiness is keeping the family together, but that clearly isn’t doing Leah any good. Gary isn’t a saint by any means, but Amber’s temper and extreme insecurity keeps them from moving forward. They go from engaged to “GET OUT!” in less than five seconds.
Their apartment’s usually in a disastrous state and with Gary not working, I would expect him to get things together so Amber is not responsible for everything. I believe that is why Amber has so much resentment. She is hard at work and trying so hard to be a good mom that she just bursts apart at the seems. I think the only way for Gary and Amber to be okay with each other is for them to separate. They have to get their lives together on their own before they can be a functional couple.
MACEY: Dedicated, even tempered, and mature beyond her years; Macey always rises to the occasion for little Bentley. Like Amber, at first Macey did everything she could to make things work with Ryan. Ryan, however, is a piece of work. He has a lot of trouble showing his emotion and instead just acts indifferent or like a big jerk. For awhile, Macey put up with as much as she could, but he treated her so terribly that she had to let go. The best thing about Macey and Ryan is that they they do not yell at each other.
Even though they have been to court, Macey and Ryan still manage to be as amicable as possible. Ryan often does not listen to Macey telling him that Bentley is not using his pacifier anymore, but she excepts that she can’t control what is going on when she is not there. Macey does really want to move to be closer to her friends which puts her two hours away from Bentley’s father, Ryan. You can be sure that Ryan will not be happy about this.
She is now dating a new man named Kyle who she has known since childhood. She was extremely hesitant to introduce him to Bentley and waited a long time to do so. He is the reason she wants to transfer and move. While this is a huge life change, I think that Macey has really though it through. She is a great mom and gives Bentley a lot of attention and time, while juggling school and work.
FARRAH: Her life is a roller coaster ride and she has suffered a lot of trauma along with being pregnant and becoming a mother. The father of her baby died in a car accident and his death has been extremely difficult for her to deal with. This is especially true because her parents refuse to discuss him or say anything nice about him. Her mother was strange during her pregnancy and said there was no way she would be in the room with her.
Her parents also announced they were separating. It is unclear whether her father is her real father or step-father. On top of all this emotional trauma, Farrah had clearly been used to dating and cheer leading and being social before her daughter Sophia was born. This was also difficult for her to adjust to. Her older sister was really hard on her and their household was alwasy fueled with tension. Farrah was constantly put down as a mother. Clearly, Farrah had a lot of growing up to do and was far from perfect, but she did not deserve that kind of treatment.
Off camera, her mother and her got in a gigantic violent fight. The specifics are a little confusing, but Farah had bruises on her face and her mom answered the door when the cops arrived with knives in her hands. Because of this, Farrah moved out and is trying to make it on her own. Farrah goes to school, works, and is a single mother. She has gone to counseling and is showing her emotions much better. Her mother is erratic and strange on camera, and one can imagine that this is her on her best behavior, which is frightening.
The major issue with Farrah is that she doesn’t seem to understand that their are certain places she cannot leave Sophia. For instance, Farrah left Sophia on the bed all by herself when she is unable to safely climb down. Unfortunately, Sophia fell off the bed when she was left unwatched. She also leaves Sophia in a sink full of water for her bath alone and leaves the room. One can only imagine that the MTV camera crew must be holding their breath as they watch an early toddler in these dangerous situations. Hopefully, Farrah can watch this season back and be more careful.
BEST MOM: Macey is the most functional and successful mother on Teen Mom. This does not imply that Amber and Farrah are not wonderful mother’s who are doing the best they can. However, Macey has much better variables and circumstances. She dealt with Ryan the most mature way possible and her natural motherly instincts kicked in immediately. Bentley is in a much more consistent and happy environment. Unfortunately, Amber and Farrah were not lucky enough to have an easy home life situation. I hope all of these young women continue to grow and can’t wait to continue to watch their journey.
