Pregnancy is never smooth. There are conditions in which the life of either, mother or the child or both, could be in danger due to the conditions present during the pregnancy. For many people, they ignore the invitations of health workers to go to their health centers for check-ups. The efforts are to decrease the maternal mortality rate and to ensure safe pregnancy that will deliver a healthy baby.
Dr. Roque of the U.P Philippine General Hospital has noted that advanced maternal age or mothers more than 35 years old has tendency to have problems like intrauterine fetal death, fetal mortality and complications of medical conditions brought about by age such as diabetes mellitus and hypertension. They have two-fold risk of this problems compared to those who are 30 years old. The teenagers who are aged below 18 years of age are high risk due to the tendency to have preeclampsia and they have a tendency to have intentional abortion due to their financial dilemma at the time surrounding the pregnancy. The hypertension can cause the placental insufficiency that will eventually lead to intrauterine growth restriction and fetal demise.
Obesity is associated with increased fetal growth and medical complications like preeclampsia or pregnancy-induced hypertension, and gestational diabetes. The fetal size may lead to difficult labor that will eventually lead to operative delivery. Modest weight loss can help.
Smokers should cease the habit because it can cause growth restriction also. Illicit drugs can cause fetal compromise, as well. Since alcohol crosses the placenta readily, the alcoholics should break their habit to prevent withdrawal symptoms to the infant. It can also cause anatomical defect such as cleft lips, and palate, cardiac defects and prenatal and postnatal growth restriction.
The complications of abruptio placenta, severe postpartum bleeding due to uterine atony and uterine rupture are seen among the multiparas or those who have many previous pregnancies. Thus, blood products are prepared for them once they got into labor.
People with medical complications are risky. Patients with cardiac problems should be observed meticulously because they may suffer congestion or cardiac failure during labor and in certain stages of pregnancy. The diabetics’ should have controlled glucose level because the uncontrolled level can cause sudden intrauterine demise or abnormality in the baby. Those with hypothyroidism should have their condition treated or else, it may cause pregnancy loss. The hyperthyroidism may cause heart failure to the mother and death of the baby days after delivery.
