When it comes to celebrities selling pictures of their babies, a widely held opinion asserts that it’s a selfish move, even narcissistic. These people certainly don’t need money, so why are they posing with their newborn on the cover of a magazine?
Celebrities sell these pictures in an effort to protect both their babies and themselves. In doing so, they are able to control to whom the pictures go and how they are displayed. We all know that when a Hollywood couple welcomes a new baby, the media is all over it. People want to see what this darling infant looks like since his or her parents are so beautiful. By giving a credible publication (i.e. People) a first look at their baby, celebrities are able to avoid the paparazzi frenzy that often comes at this very fragile time. Besides, these individuals aren’t exactly strapped for cash, so oftentimes the funds generated from the pictures end up going to charity or towards other good causes (i.e. education).
A majority of today’s big stars have gone this route of selling the rights to their baby pictures. This includes those who love their privacy. Examples include Jessica Alba, Nicole Richie, Jennifer Lopez, etc. This doesn’t mean that it’s “cool” or “in”. Instead the trend likely suggests that celebs know they cannot escape the ever-persistent paparazzi, and they want to get the media blitz over with. If posing for a picture with their baby means they can have some peace and quiet, then to them it’s well worth it. The payout doesn’t hurt either. In a 2008 article, the Insider points out that “J Lo and Marc Anthony took in enough cash by selling their babies’ photos to provide for the twins for the rest of their lives.” Indeed the couple received $6 million for the pictorial, which appeared in People magazine.
The arrival of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s twins in 2008 garnered what is perhaps the biggest payout in celebrity baby picture history. According to the Today show website, an unnamed source revealed that People and London’s Hello! Magazine split a bill of $14 million! It’s hard to comprehend this amount of money just for a few pictures of two parents posing with newborns. The figure just goes to show the value of celebrity baby pictures. In the previously mentioned case of Angelina and Brad, Today reported that the funds went to a foundation created by the couple that focuses on helping children around the world.
It’s unfortunate, but the truth is Hollywood stars are left with few options when it comes to their children’s faces becoming visible to the public. Eventually they need to leave their homes, and when they do, photographers will be waiting. This is why they sell pictures of their babies early on – to avoid some of the hysteria and stress that come with being a famous new parent.
